Properly translated from the original Hebrew, the phrase is: You shall not murder. Look at a Jewish version of the Ten Commandments: http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Scripture/Torah/Ten_Cmds/ten_cmds.html

Killing in self defense, a just war, and lawful capital punishment are not considered murder.

Moses execution of 3,000 people guilty of idolatry could be considered as capital punishment.

With love in Christ.

Before they were destroyed Moses gave them a choice. God or
the Golden Calf. None of them had to die. It was their choice.

Recommend you see the 1953 classic, "The Ten Commandments". A deMille movie with Heston as Moses, Paget as Lilia, Robinson as Dathan, and Brynner as Pharaoh.
All timer.

The Hebrew word was wrongly translated by KJV and others. The Hebrew word translates correctly to unlawful killing. In other words, what we know as MURDER. "Thou shall not murder," is the correct rendering of the original Hebrew. Killing is acceptable with just cause. Murder is unlawfully killing without a just cause.

God can kill whomever He wants, He always has just cause and reason. He is the Creator.

Moses was not God. Do not assume that God approved of every act performed by the prophets.

Don't you dare try to use reason on a cristian. They prefer faith, a.k.a. brainwashing, to reason.
