Because your pupils are wide open. When you open your eyes to the light it exposes them to sudden light and it hurts until the adjust (shrink).

Because we shift from one stage to another and it is quite shocking for the body, especially if you have sleep deprivation, or didn't get enough rest, the body is simply not ready for such a drastic change of going from sleep, slumber, back to awakening, it takes some time.
You should wake up gradually and try to get a full 8 hours of sleep and you will be refreshed each morning, when I go to sleep early I feel really great.
But any time you are in the dark and turn on the light the eyes have to go through the big adjustment, pupils dialate,.

Its because the pupils in your eyes are vey large so you can see in the dark.
Then when you put on the light it hurts due to the fact your pupils are taking in too much light. Once the pupils contract to their usual size the pain stops

First because your eyes are dry, second because your puplis have expanded due to not being in the light so initially they get more light than they need so your retina is briefly over exposed.
