She doesn't understand them, she just likes the bright colours, and the rapid movement, as long as she's not watching for too long, it won't do her any harm.

As a teacher of 4 and 5 year olds I see the damage TV can do. I'm not against it completely but do limit the time she spends in front of the box
Children learn speech by looking at a person's face as well as listening to the words ..... the number of children with speech problems increases every year and we are not talking about lisps or stammers it is complete inability to shape their mouths to form the sounds .. some are still not speaking coherently at 8 and 9.
sorry to rant.......you probably have no intention of letting your daughter watch too much TV but you could pass the info on to friends if need be.

no your'e baby is to young to understand watch she is watching. the tone and the pitch of the noise coming from the tv is what is drawing her attention. most cartoons are designed that way to draw in children of all ages with the coloring and the tones and pitches of the noise. Thats why you find alot of children mesmerized by them. It's not really going to harm her now. It is just helping develop and distinguish her hearing and visual. Now when she reaches 1 really moniter what type she watches and how often. She'll be very fragile into learning very bad ideas and manners; and you'll find the alot of the most popular and even recomended and in fact not what you would agree with as to being appropriate.

no, she can't understand this and NO! it is definitely not a good idea to expose her tothis medium at this age.
At birth children don't know what they are seeing--if you've ever seen biology slides of the insides of a cell, where all you see is blobs, circles and weird lines--and you have no idea what the hell that is or means, then that is what a baby sees.
But, because a baby is learning, they take it all in and start to make sense of their world. Your baby needs to interact with human expression at a normal pace--not the TV super fast pace of images. Your baby also neds the interaction of her/him doing something and the adult reacting to that and vice versa.
Experts have said that it is actually bad for an infant below 2 years old to spend time watching TV. They are still learning (or need to be learning) normal human interaction.

No, she can't understand the cartoons. She probably likes the colours. Television is not good for babies so I would get her one of those light display things and see if that has the same effect on her.

She is beginning to focus, and probably likes the bright colours. It is ok to let her watch for a few minutes, but don't let har sit in front of the TV, she needs other stimulation.
