The company has many other products with a lowercase "i" in front of the name, including iSight, iChat, iTunes, iDVD, iBook, and many more.
As for pod, I have two guesses: An acronym for "POrtable Digital", or just because it's a "pod", a compact storage device capable of holding many small things.
