I've seen a few posts on here saying the world is going to end soon. Some even give specific dates. I was just wondering, how many times the world was supposed to have ended by now? If you've seen specific dates, especially from historic texts, list as many as you have. Also, if you used to believe the world would have ended by now, what changed your mind? (if it changed before the named date. If you changed your mind afterward, I think it's fairly obvious why.)

Sorry for lack of specificity. I was talking about people of Christian faiths.

Well biblically speaking the Bible clearly states that no man will know the day or hour. And all the signs of the coming end are so vague that interpretation could make them fit almost any time of major strife or change. There have in the past been total panics in some societies even over a comet that stayed in view too long, although that was long long ago. I saw one historical text that when they broke the dates down they think it was Halley's comet that caused all the panic. Also many thought WW1 and then WW2 would be the end, again, kingdoms were rising and falling during these times and with a little interpretation and some good old blind faith they made it fit. What I fear most is the idea of some of these end timers who seem at times to look forward to the end of the world getting enough control over a world power to actually cause something close to the end in some self fulfilling prophesy, like using the massive US nuclear arsenal for instance. I think Bush comes close to fitting that mold but not quite, but it is something to think about and should give us pause about how religious a person we really want in positions of major power.

Phil,
The world can't end, according to what i've learned, for at least 1007 years. I'm going to paste a pre recorded message to show you why I can say this. I did write it all if that counts, I think that it will give you an idea of how long we have to wait for the END OF THE WORLD.

Important: Going backwards from the End.

The Post Millennium
There will be a time when Satan is released from a place where he was bound for a thousand years. When he comes out, he will convince a certain people to rise up and come against Jesus who is at Jerusalem. No one except God knows how long that will take, and when it will occur.

The Millennium
Which means: 1000 years of Christ ruling on Earth. He comes down and sets His feet upon the Mount of Olives in Israel after He brings the enemies of Israel together to make war against them. He destroys those enemies and sets up the 1000-year earthly Kingdom. Not all Christians believe this, but I do and those who believe like me.

The Great Tribulation
This is a seven-year period when God pours His wrath out on the Earth. It occurs after those that are in the body of Christ (the church), are taken out of the way. Often referred to as the Rapture of the Church, the Jews will have the temple built in Jerusalem, and on the World's stage a man supposedly of Peace will actually make peace in the Middle East for seven years, three and one half years into the deal he will break that promise, and make war. So, seven years, the last three and one half years there will be many things happening that will make it seem that the Earth is being destroyed.

The Present Day
We are on the far side of all that I have written. Israel is a nation once again as was prophesied. The church is awaiting the Rapture. The Rapture, as with all the fulfilled "Set Times" or "Feasts" that are observed by the Jews were set by God to show His manipulation of history, in advance.

For instance: Jesus was laid in the tomb as a fulfillment of Passover. The Spirit of God was poured out on men speaking the tongues of all nations on Pentecost. The Rapture of the Church will take place on the Feast of the Trumpets. It might not be this year, but on any year it won't occur unless it's on the Feast of the Trumpets. This year, the Feast of the Trumpets happens on 23 September, next month. If it does not happen then, it wont happen until one of the later years on the Feast of the Trumpets.

So we have the Rapture, whenever that is to take place, the Great Tribulation of seven years, the millennium for a thousand years, and the time that it takes Satan to convince a people to come again Jesus in Jerusalem, however long that is before the end of the world.

I'm an Atheist, I Believe that the End of the World is Ridiclouis.

Since I've Been on my own I know not to Trust People of Faith and that World will End but It won't, Because the World always Evoluves and Doesn't Create War and Violence.

That's What Religion does to People Creates War and Violence, If Wise Up and Condemn God You Will in Peace and Believe that the Gospel is Garbage.

I'm not sure why the end of the world is such a terrifying concept. I mean, are we all supposed to run around with our undies around our ankles and our hair on fire? Why bother?

Same thing as our own personal deaths. Who cares? Sure, the pain of death sounds really, really unpleasant, but death itself is only regrettable - even for atheists.

Meaning always comes afterwards, not before. So... how could the end of the world have any meaning for the participants? We're all dead, big whoop. There's nobody around to care, there's nobody to experience the experience of caring, there's nobody and no memories - it's all destroyed. The end. So what?

I don't understand how someone could get worked up over the end of the world. Sure, we'd all probably want to experience fun stuff before the end, but when we're dead there'll be nobody to remember all the good times we had. In the end, all that really matters in life is the experience of it, but you can't take that with you. Er.. more to the point, there will be no you to take anywhere and as far as you're concerned there will have never been a you.

:) Have a nice day!

Jehovah's witnesses have been saying the world will end for years they must have given many dates that have past. but as a christian I believe Jesus when he said no one can know the time or date only God (the father) knows it will come when we least expect it no predictions have any value accept to deceive

The early Christians actually expected Jesus to come back very soon--- many of them even quit their jobs in anticipation to prepare, and the apostles had to urge them to just keep living their normal lives. I guess they were off by at least 2000 years.

i don't believe that the word will end in the future.nothing will change my mind there is no day and is will not be in the future the only thing that we have to do is to have a great time in the earth for the 100 years that we are going to stay here before. our life ends.

We are being pushed into WW III but that would mean it will take 20,000 degrees Fahrenheit to burn up the whole earth. Once by water now by fire. My love is an all consuming fire. Water and fire are symbolic of the spirit. In the end times God will pour out his spirit on all flesh. No man will seek God on a mountain because he will be found everywhere. Perhaps, we should not live in fear of the inevitable?

I choose to not live in fear. Perfect love cast out all fear.

It is really a great sin to say that the so and so is the date of the end of the World. No one has the knowledge of the date of the end of the world. But God has..
