I prefer just a very simple beef stew. Place cut meat on a casserole (or a pressure cooker) with sufficient water, add a medium size onion, few heads of crushed garlic, black pepper and salt. Adding a small piece of fresh ginger makes it taste good too.

Boil until the meat is tender. I love adding vegetable too but just one kind of vegetable per recipe. A green beans, radish, cabbage, unripe papaya and potato are amongst my choices. Add vegetables few minutes before the meat is done not to overcook. A teaspoon of cornstarch dissolved in a water added to your stew as the final touch enhances the flavor. If you are a monosodium glutamate user, go ahead you may add the way you do. Season your stew according to your desired taste. "BEEF STEW IS READY!"

Tip: Good choice of meat makes a big difference in the outcome.♥

Hi Alexis. I"m seeing a lot of good recipes here. But couldn't resist getting mine in. I'm a New England cook, and we always cook Good. But quick and easy. So if none of the rest work out for you, maybe you can give this one a try.
You will need, Large Pot with lid.
Stew Beef, Potatoes, Carrots (I use those baby carrots, less work), Onions & Turnip. *Not the Southern Turnip. The Northern kind. (Waxy skin) and 2 packages of Tones or McCormick Stew Mix. ( Even the store brands are good)
In pot, put Stew meat and cover with water. Add you powder mix to that and stir it up. Let that come to a boil. Reduce heat to medium. Add your carrots, onions and turnip. ( Yes the turnip is sometimes hard to cut up. Peal the waxy skin first. With sharp knife cut it in 4. Then cut in chunks. It's easier) Let all that cook for about 1 1/2 hours with lid on but slightly cracked.
Then add Potato's. Let cook about another hour. Stew is ready when your vegetables are fully cooked and meat is tender. Cooking time about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. ( Depending on how big a pot you make) Make sure you stir it around from time to time.
If for some reason the gravy is not thick enough for you, just add some instant potato's to the stew. And stir. It will thicken it up. Not to much. A little goes a long way's. Hope you enjoy! The secret is the Turnip. It's the flavor that it adds to the stew. And the wonderful aroma while cooking. Have Fun!

This is a really easy and can be a pretty quick recipe:

Roll beef stew pieces in flour, sear them till they are all brown, then add them to a pot of water. Cut up some carrots, potatoes, an onion and maybe some celery ( or any veggies you like) I just put some in until everything looks porportioned. I like to add one packet of McCormick's beef stew seasoning mix and a little bit of Spade L beef seasoning (you can usually find it near the meat counter). I usually put enough water in it to cover everything plus about 1 inch. Let it all boil until the veggies are tender and season with a little S & P. This a super easy and very yummy recipe. Just watch your salt cause there is salt in the stew seasoning and the Spade L so you won't need very much.

If you meat is a little tough, cook it all in a crock pot for the day. That will really tenderize it!!

Serve with rolls, bread, breadsticks, or really any type of bread you want. I like potato rolls.

Good luck!!!

1. Beef - sirloin, chuck, eye round or other roast - but don't forget to get it as lean as possible. You need some fat, but if it's too greasy, you then have to refrigerate it to separate the fat and remove it from the top. To make a large pot of beef stew, you may start with 1 to 2 pounds of beef minimum!

2. Cut up whatever beef you have! ...into about 1" or 1-2" cubes.

3. Cook the beef - a couple tablespoons of olive oil on the bottom of the pan, and try to fry the beef about 5-10 minutes on high, cover then 15 minutes on low. Stirring every few minutes, while adding salt & pepper to taste.

4. Cut up onions (vidalia are the best or other sweet onions). More onions the better. Add to the frying beef, and fry together. Salt & pepper to taste.

5. Cut up garlic and add to the frying onions & beef. Stir well.

6. Cut up carrots, and a small amount of celery if you have it. Then add to the pot. Salt and pepper to taste.

7. Add beef stock or , add enough water to cover everything. If you have beef stock or any other stock, add that ...again to cover everything. Bring to a boil.....then, put it on low, and cover. Add whatever seasoning you like (Italian, etc.) It may take anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to 3 hours to make a good beef stew depending upon the amount of beef.

8. Cook potatoes separately if you can (microwave preferred), if not boil the potatoes separately covered - cut up, about 15 minutes then turn off. Do not add until the beef stew has cooked about 1 1/2+ hours.

9. Add potatoes and cook together another 15-20 minutes. Again keep tasting to see if it has enough seasoning.

10. Shopping list: Beef-1 to 3 pounds depending on fat and how much you want to make (and freeze for later).
Beef stock or veal stock (chicken if you don't have the other)
......note try to get low sodium so you can salt to your taste,
Onions, garlic, celery-a little, carrots,
potatoes or - could be optional if you want to serve over
brown or wild rice,
dry seasoning (Italian in the shaker is good)
salt & pepper.

Happy cooking....remember it gets better the next day, if it lasts that long!

i'll tell you how i do it! First off I eyeball everything!
So i get a roast english roast works fine. a Crock pot.. some potatatos, veggys your choice i would put the following Asparagus, carrots, broccile.... Seasons for the meat! Some Monteral Seasoning... Some parsly, Minced roasted garlic,.. pepper fresh ground,, salt not to much. .. if you have a beef packet mix it would be the same thing as if you got some ramon noodles BEEF flavored and just use the mix not the noodles and season with some of that save the rest for mixing with the food!

Take the potatos and cut them into so there is 4 peices of about equel size!
put them in the bottom of the pot. add 1/2 stick of butter!
put the meat on the potatos put extra potatos on top of meat....
put extra pepper... and a dash of salt...add water until food is covered every time you add water add some beef mix to it as well! and toss in some extra seasonsings!

cook in the crock pot on high for 1/2 hour then 6 hours on low by this time the meat should fall a part or be close to it! leave the stuff cooking but pull out the roast and pull off what you can for now! and throw it back in! you can do this while the roast is in the pot just becareful!
cook on low for a few more hours going back and shedding the beef and adding water as needed!
When your almost done add the asparagus and carrots..
cook on low for at least 1 more hour then stir and serve!
Yummy!\
Hope i explained it well!
Mad luv

My Easy Crock pot Stew
The night before:
place stew meat (mine is usually frozen when I start out, but it really doesn't matter)
a can or two of tomato's (I used diced with jalapenos but any kind you like is fine)
a chopped onion or two if they are small
Two beef bouillon cubes or 1 package of beef gravy mix and 3 or 4 cups of water.
all in a Crock pot on low.
The next morning I add a can of potatoes (diced) and a can or two of mixed veggies (any kind is fine.

That's my basic recipe. I add salt to taste near the end and pepper. The veggies and tomatoes often vary because I use what I have on hand. Thus far I have never had leftovers, but I have had to listen to one fight over who gets the last bowl.

Funny you should ask, I just threw one together on Saturday.
Here's how it went:

got a 1.5 lb round steak and cut it into bite size pieces, trimming off the fat. Olive oil and 1 onion sliced sauteing in the pan and toss in the steak pieces.
After the steak was browned, it & the onions went into the crock pot.

In the now empty skillet mix 2 cups water, 2 tbsp beef bullion and 2tbsp tomato paste - stir till dissolved. put aside.

Add 2 cups of baby carrots, 4 stalks of celery chopped, a pint of button mushrooms, about 15 baby potatoes washed & cut in half and 2 cups of green beans jumped in the crock pot too. Then pour the broth mixture over it all. Put a lid on the crock pot, but it on high. 5 hours later you have beef stew ready to go.

Hi I notice you already have 41 answers...I might repeat one but ..don't have time to check each one out...so here it goes
Beef Stew 4 U
Buy enough stewing beef like lean chuck for 4 about 3 lbs.
Flour, paprika, salt and pepper for dredging
olive oil for browning

6 carrots peeled and chopped into med. chunks
6 med. all purpose potatoes peeled and cut in quarters
2 good sized yellow onions peeled and cut into quarters
1 small. box of frozen peas
1 8 oz. box of fresh button mushrooms ( optional)

1 15 oz. can of diced tomatoes

1/4 cup of Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup or less cornstarch
1/2 cup cold water

In large deep soup pot place 1/3 cup olive oil and heat until very hot.
Have ready the meat you have dredged in the flour and seasonings.
Place the meat in the oil and cook all over until nice and brown adjust the heat so not to burn.
When meat is browned, add the veggies and stir around to moisten with the juices and oil. Now add the can of diced tomatoes.
Take a two cup measuring cup and place in it the Worcestershire sauce, water and cornstarch. Stir with whisk to mix the starch into the liquid so there are no lumps.
Pour this mixture over the ingredients in the pot...bring to boil then simmer for about 90 minutes. Check to see if it needs more water added. Towards the end add 1/2 bunch of washed and chopped parsley. Great with a loaf of french bread and dish of fruit.

Cube your beef and brown it. (about 2 pounds)
Drench it lightly in flour and put it in your Crock pot slow cooker or the pot you are going to cook it in.

Add together:
1 cup beef broth
1 can chopped organic tomatoes
1/2 cup red wine or sherry (grape juice can be substituted)
2 bay leaves
12 pepper corns
1 large chopped onion
2 cloves of garlic chopped
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1/2 tsp ground cumin
some salt (1 tsp?)
Heat it all together until boiling and pour this mix over the beef cubes.
Cook on low heat for about 2 and 1/2 hours.

While it is cooking chop and boil the vegetables you are going to add: carrots, a turnip, more onions, potatoes, a parsnip, some peas, celery. Don't overcook them. Add them to the the stew about 5 - 10 minutes before it is done.

If you use a slow cooker, start on "high", but turn it down to "low" once it heats up.

In my family we make it as follows
Cut 1-1.5 lbs of round steak into small pieces, season with salt pepper and garlic, sear in a large pan. Add just enough water to cover and 1 or 2 pkg(if you are using a large pan use two) Lipton recipe secrets beefy onion soup mix, and simmer for 2-4 hours. Fill with water, add carrots (2 cups) and potatoes (about 2 cups diced) and choice of other veggies. We use corn, peas and green beans. When potatoes and carrots are tender, thicken the broth . We use a thickening made of three tsp corn starch and 1/4 cup flour. If more flavor is need add beef base, bullion or another pkg of soup mix. Please note that all measures are approximate because we do not use recipes to cook. Also we have made this in the crock pot and the roaster, it adapts really well.
