Thankfully I am not at that age to worry about this. However, two of my coworkers have been through exams. One stated it was no big deal, but a little embarrasing, while the other said it really hurt. If I had to guess I am sure its somewhere in the middle.

It's a breeze, really. They will give you an IV and put you to sleep. The nurse said she also gave me a drug so I wouldn't remember anything and it worked. She started the IV and said I would begin to feel sleepy and the next thing I knew I woke up all warm and cozy. I had no indication at all anything had happened. And there was no sensation or pain at all. No sensation of anything after either, anywhere. I just had one done eight weeks ago and it was fine. My procedure was the full meal deal with the 6-foot "black momba". All the way baby! My doctor told me physicians are opting for the full colonoscopy now because they get much more information and a much more thorough exam while establishing a baseline for future exams.
The worst part is the junk you have to drink the day before. Be prepared to spend the evening before out of service on the commode. But once that is over the rest is a piece of cake. Really! Nothing to worry about. Congratulations on getting it done!

most people think of one medical exam with that famous instrument known as the "silver bullet."

having gone through one exam, it was explained to me that for most people now-a-days, the exam actually is NOT a full colonoscopy which is highly invasive (read : penetrating ). that exam is reserved for people who have symptoms or other medical issues that cause physician to desire, pardon the pun, a deeper understanding.

most people and especially for that magical age 50 group, the exam consists of a penetration but less so and without pain but some serious cramping as if one has to go reaaaaallllllll bad. if you're lucky, the examiner has a video screen and you can watch the inside views of your innards.... very interesting for anyone who liked anatomy.

heres a tip: don't get up and dress while saying, 'thank you' to the examiner.... you'll get an odd look.

********* modification: after reading another post answer, the exam most people get is called the sphigmoidoscopy... although the spelling is a bit off..... anyway.... THAT is the routine exam. the full colonoscopy is the one for deep thinking docs.

I had the sphigmoidotomy or something like that. They use a flexible thing that can go around the corners of your colon. It is kind of like gas cramps. The last part hurts a little, bu tnot pain like being cut. It isn't enough to warrant pain meds.

you will be so heavily sedated that it really wont matter. you will be awake for the procedure and feel a little pressure but thats about all. as for after the exam, you will feel a little sore ...but its to be expected...it isn't anything that will keep you out of work...you'll just sit down a little slower. nothing to where you will need pain meds though. good luck and i wish you the best...sry to hear about your mom

It all depends on the skill of the surgeon, but you will feel discomfort definately, and if and I say if, because it is very very rare, but if they should cut you going up or coming out, there is no cure you will bleed to death, that is the reason to get a really good one, some one who does nothing but that, made me real nervous, because they make you sign a paper saying that if they make that fatal mistake, they are not responsible!!!
