Some of the Distinctines of Baptists are:
1) Baptism: Baptists practice "Believers-only Baptism" and baptism by immersion. Baptists beleive that only those who can profess, declare and live out a personal faith in Jesus Christ ought to baptised - this rules out infant baptism.
2) Church Polity: The most common form of church government in Baptist churches is that of "Single Elder (Pastor)." The members of the congregation also elect a board of deacons who serve under the single elder (pastor) and give him support. Ordinarily and unless the congregation gives them the power, the deacon board serves only in an advisory capacity.
3) General Theology: Genrally speaking, almost all Baptists are Reformed (Calvinist) in Theology. That is to say, they beleive in:
(a) Total depravity: Sin has corrupted every aspect of human nature; but this does not mean that human beiengs are as evil as they can be nor does it mean human beings are incapable of doing good.
(b) Unconditional Election: Salvation is a matter of God’s unconditional election, totally apart from any human merit.
(c) Limited Atonement: The efficacy of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is limited to those elected to salvation. But many Baptists rather subscribe to unlimited atonement - i.e., that Christ died for the sins of the whole world, but the efficacy of the atonement can only be applied through personal faith in he Savior.
(d) Irresistible Grace: God elects to salvation, apart from any merit, by drawing men to Christ in irresistible grace, through the operation of the Holy Spirit.
(e) Preservation: Those who are elected to salvation, drawn to Christ in irresistible grace through the work of the Holy Spirit, will be preserved, or will persevere in a saved state. This means that those who are saved can never be finally lost.
(4) Eschatology: Almost all Baptists are pre-millenialists (i.e., Christ will return BEFORE the millenium - the 1000 year reign of Christ).
Hope this helps you :)

A Baptist is a member of a baptist church or a person who believes in the practice of baptism by immersion into water. I have listed a website below that may help explain more about a Baptist's beliefs.

It's my understanding that baptists split after the reformation because they did not agree with infant baptism. Because baptism was the issue they became known as Baptists. Now days the label baptist seems to mean any given number of things depending upon the qualifications in front of it. Southern Baptist, Free Will Baptist etc. They all started off Calvinistic but now they run the gamut.

i came from the fundamental baptist church - which believes that "many things happen in the dark" ... so, avoid dark places like movie houses, club/bar/beer houses, as long as it is dark place... when you go to the church, wear your best clothes but not pants! and others...

That unless you almost drowned, it wasn't a "real" baptism.
That if it's fun, it must be a sin.
That anything in religion that is organized must be Catholic.
