I am fully aware that pilots in the US cannot be on any anti depressents and i know the medicine i take is banned. But how long do i have to be off before i can get a certificate. I also plan on becoming an airline pilot will this conflict much? Are the rules strict? Do they have to do a lot of testing? Anything would help if anyone knows something about anti-depressents or depression with aviation.

Go to http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/ and ask your question there.
On the forum there is an Aviation Medical Examiner that specializes in "Special Issuance's" which is going to be necessary for you to obtain you Medical. Address your question to Dr. Bruce. I "think" the answere to how long off the meds is going to be 90 days.

That is a very tough subject in the aviation world. I like to do my fair share of researching in the Federal Aviation Regulations, and maybe I can impress some other fellow pilots that might read this...haha F.A.R.'s is a document that gives most FAA regulations. The regulations state as follows:

Sub part C- Second Class Airman Medical Certificate (that required for commercial Operations)

67.207 Mental
No established medical history or clinical diagnosis of any of the following:
(1) A personality disorder that is severe enough to have repeatedly manifested itself by overt acts.
(2) A psychosis. As used in this section, "psychosis" refers to a mental disorder in which:
the individual has manifested delusions, hallucinations, grossly bizarre or disorganized behavior, or other commonly accepted symptoms of this condition.
(3) A bipolar disorder
(4) Substance dependence

So on and so on.... There are some other paragraphs that mention that one must be in sound mental health in general to receive a medical. But there is not anything specific to Depression.

Sorry for the long drawn out answer, but I wanted to be ultra clear.
Good luck, Brian S.

You cannot get a medical certificate for a pilot's license if you are on antidepressants. You Doctor should be the one to judge when the malady is cured.

I had my medical declined for anti-depressants when I was first learning to fly. I just had to get my doctor to sign a note saying I was okay to get off them (not flying is more depressing) and I got my medical.
