An ethernet connection consists of a pair for Transmit & pair for Receive. To communcate computer to computer there needs to be a crossover...
So -
In the 8 conductor cat-5 cable the RJ48 connector - Pins 1 & 2 Are TX
Pins 3 & 6 are RX.
So to cross over Pair 1 & 2 from computer 1 got to Pair 3 & 6 on computer 2
Pair 1 &2 on computer 2 go to Pair 3 & 6 on computer 1.

If you are stuck for money you can use metal from wire hangers, then you CREATE A TINY DOMAIN, it depends on HOW MANY COMPUTERS, less than 12 should be fine.
