We had the contaminated spinach linked to organic farming now the carrot juice recall linked to organic farming http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15163262/ . We are told that organic is healthier yet people are dieing or getting seriously ill from eating the stuff. Can we really trust all the hype about organic or is organic downright dangerous?

I think it is the mere fact that organic vegetables are grown in manure that makes them unhealthy. Just think, you wouldn't wipe your carrot on a cows bottom before eating it, but that's exactly what you are doing when you eat vegetables grown in manure. The problem is that the bacteria get inside the plant cells and washing can't remove them.

There's no cover-up, its just that there is no scientific evidence to show that trace amounts of pesticides on food cause harm. As far as GMO goes, there is yet to be a single confirmed case of harm resulting from eating GM food. So which would you choose? Personally I worry about organic, because of the constant reports of death and poisoning resulting from the eating the stuff. There must be a good reason that life expectancy shot up when modern farming was introduced. Before everything was organic and life expectancy was low. Go figure.

The e.coli contamination is just that, contamination, and it can happen whether you're farming organically or not.

If you look at any bag of fertilizer or insecticide, you'll probably see that it's marked POISON.

Then your farmer puts it on his crops. The chemicals seep into the cell structure of the plant.

Then he harvests those crops, rinses them a bit, and sells them to the store. Now you go and buy it, you take it home and you wash it again ... but how do you get those chemicals out of the cell structure?

You can't. So you eat it... and then the chemicals become part of YOUR cell structure. Maybe you'll get sick, maybe you won't. But the vast increases in cancers, handicapped children, kids with ADD, hyperactivity, autism, etc etc has been increasing over the years, and there are some strong arguments that it's in our food.

There are lots of interest groups who would love to keep this kind of stuff quiet but if you're open minded and willing to experiment a little, you might try organics for a month or so and see whether you feel any different. But give it a fair shot

In a word: no.

This recent preoccupation with 'natural' and 'organic' food is a fad. More than that, it is neurotic. The term is used properly. Even worse, with some, their unnatural fixation with food, based on the notion that the 'right' type of food equates with longevity (or more properly the avoidance of death) has become a dangerous - even destructive - fetish, affecting interpersonal relations, jeopardising their being able to maintain a normal, healthy lifestyle.

Eating 'organic' anything won't add one day to your life. Staying fit, eating reasonably, even wearing a smile on your face, all will however.

I am NOT what I eat, and I pity those who are. I am more than that, for there is more to life than food.

The contaminated spinach was linked to manure used. In general organic is better as it doesnt have all the pesticides etc......but unfortunately it's usually more expensive than conventionally grown stuff.
Kinda funny.....you'd think if they didn't have to spend the money on the pesticides that it would be less expensive.

Yes I still believe that. I would rather eat organic food and take a chance of getting sick, then eat genetically altered food, or vegetables that are full of pesticides. Besides that, they recall food all the time that isn't organic....http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html

They are not healthier, they are just more expensive because they are fresher. If everyone I mean everyone bought organic vegetables then the price would go down. "Supply in demand".
