Whatever you think about Jim Gilchrist, the man who founded The Minuteman Project, you've got to give him this: All signs indicate that his opposition to illegal immigration is an honestly held conviction.
That's one reason I'd listen to him speak. Here are two more: His convictions are shared by many Americans, and the organization he founded has transformed the immigration debate. A man like that can teach you something, whether you find his rhetoric as inspiring as the Sermon on the Mount or as wrongheaded as Hugo Chavez's speech to the United Nations.
Maybe what he teaches you is that illegal immigration really is a problem. Or maybe he teaches you to better understand Minutemen whose actions you vehemently oppose. Agree or disagree, he's an influential man and one who has thought a great deal about the immigration debate.

I think that Gilchrist guy is as closed minded as Hugo Chavez if the minutemen are against illegal immigration then all the vegetarian Americans would die of hunger because of the labor from these honest people that gets their lettuce in their plates. Just look at the percentage of the economy the illegal workers make, its roughly 10 % but look at the importance Cheap labor is the base of the Great American Economy. No Immigrants are not stealing jobs they're just doing what the American people don't want to do. If you're against Immigrants don't eat at all because I'm sure the dinner you eat has been processed by an illegal alien.

I have to agree. I simply don't understand what people don't understand about "illegal". This means NOT legal. Like killing is not legal, or driving 120 mph in a school zone is not legal. Why does pretty much the rest of the world has to wait their turn to immigrate here and these "illegal" people should get a pass.. The next time a person jumps to the front of the line at the movies without witing their turn.. simply let them go.. when 20 people does this, what happens....Go Minutemen!!

I work 2 jobs and my wife works one. I also am a member of the National Guard. I've got two kids to try and feed and put clothes on their back. I purchased my trailer when I was young and stupid and wound up going with a credit company that is a bully. I have tried to sign up for several aid programs but we are always either just over or just under. I got hurt while on a deployment and having to work while in severe pain just so my power, water, and home don't get taken away. The government is taken forever to get my VA claim going so I can have back surgery and if I am approve the most I can receive a month is like $900 for taking care of my bills. I drive a beat up 92 truck and can't even afford car insurance. The only thing that I make sure I buy is food for my kids though I know it is not the healthiest food for them. My daughter who is 4 got turned down for head start due to all the slots being taken by illegal immigrants. I wanted to get her in school early so that she could have a better start at life. It makes me sick at my stomach to see a Mexican driving a brand new car and not having to pay taxes at work. Companies in my area will hire illegal immigrants before they will hire citizens. Illegal immigrants in my area are not just working jobs that no one else wants but are taking some of the top paying production jobs with the best benefits. At my other job I’ve seen Mexicans come in who are illegal and try to spend food stamps on everything from beer, cigarettes, oil, gas, to toys. They will be driving a brand new car and have food stamps yet a soldier can't get them. A soldier can't get a better paying job because they have the better ones. A soldier’s daughter can't get an early start on education due to their kids taking up all the head start class spots. You wander why I support the Minute Men. I support them because I give this country my all and people who shouldn’t even be here are treated better than my family.

it's very unfortunate that all major forces argue for the right of him to speak but have never argued for the right of others to speak. They don't listen to the actual debate. The only reason so many know that there is a debate is because of this patriotic act of protest. The truth is that Gilchrist's right to speak is not in jeopardy, and it never was. He can regularly go on television and speak his mind on the issue of immigration and has done so frequently. His views are well known and no one missed a chance to hear them at Columbia. However, what about the people who disagree with him? You have never seen anyone pose the questions to him that were raised by this event. The issue of discriminating against people who are not Americans does not come up. Why aren't you arguing for their right to speak.? They are the ones who need the help. They are the ones who have to shout to be heard.

In America we have this thing called freedom of speech. What I don't understand is how people interpret this amendment as "unless it's offensive." Not everyone has the same views, ideas, or morals. Yes people are going to say things that offend you. Yes people are going to say things that make you angry. But you have to accept that everyone has this right, no matter their views. I'm not saying I agree Jim Gilchrist's ideas, but I do respect his right to voice them. If people don't want to listen to him talk, then don't listen. You have that right. It's that simple.

I have no problem with one speaking his opinion as long as it excluded racial slurs, profanities etc.

HE says illegal immigration is a problem. What if I don't think it's such a big problem? What if I think he's blowing it all out of proportion???
