I think the definition of mental illness is too normative to be valid. Maybe people who people call "crazy" are just operating based on own set of norms. What do you think?

Eccentric people carry on with their unique individual lives without hurting themselves or others. Mentally ill people carry behavorial traits that call for careful attention and medical treatments; they are prone to hurt themselves or others.

In my view, the eccentrics are people of high intellect and positive creative energy.

Mental ill is a chemical embalanced in some part of the brain or another due to disorder or injury. Usually people with this do not have what is needed to make the desions in full on there own or part way.

Eccentric is someone who is very strong willed who have the ablity to deside what they want and beleive no matter how differant it is from any one else. It is the way they live their life no matter what other people think and alot of the times it is a amusment to them on the reaction they can get from other people. You live a certain way for 50 years it is normal for you and you are comfortable with it and don't want to change even if other people don't agree on living like that. I think being eccentic would be actually fun to be when I am older LOL. They are able to control everything in their world, but they do not have a mental disorder, they just like being weird. Like the crazy cat lady, she isn't crazy she just chose cats over people for what ever reason and was alone with them for so long she no loner looked at them as animals any more but someone just like her.

Mental Illness is a bigoted word meaning Eccentric. There's no such thing as Mental Illness, unless you got a brain tumor or something.

I'm eccentric and mentally ill. My treatments for bipolar, GAD, and narcolepsy hasn't changed my preferences or personality. They just make me calmer, more stable, more awake, less irritable and a better version of myself. But I'm still an artist with unique view points and creativity. It's about creativity and original thought.

there is a difference of about 1 nano metre.
seriously though. mentally ill people will break out aginst their common sense and behave in ways which are dangerous and irresponsible . eccentric people are less inhibited . eccentric people are not constrained by constantly checking their behaviours in terms of , '' what will other people think of me ? ''
An eccentric person poses no threat to anyone ( only to your street cred ) unless they embarass you in word or deed when you are with them or in their vicinity !!
mentally ill people are a danger to themselves or others or will do stupid things that have consequences for them selves that are not beneficial. Spend all their money. burn all their clothes . start shoplifting

Your query is valid and peculiar in todays world, because what is normal is not and what is not is. SO it is called betwix and between. The line is drawn for the INSANE when violence is present. Or violent threats, or pranks that are played to cause another bodily harm or oneself. Other than that when some of us wake up in the morning and are still asleep we have definately put the milk in the cupboard and the sugar in the fridge right? or something similar? And that is not crazy that is sleepy.

The DSM is a guide that Physicians use to determine actual Mental Illness as opposed to lesser forms of social disturbances and mere Personality disorders.

Listen to Middy (answerer above)...people don't CHOOSE to be mentally ill...it's an unfortunate illness. I have Depression & would not want to be thought of as eccentric.
