Good question.....I was wondering that myself after the NTSB made mention that they recovered a chip from the unit in the aircraft from New York. I don't think the unit records information but the chip may have some type of memory. I hope they find some useful information.

I read their info on their site and a Wikipedia article, neither said anything about it being able to record data.
Engine data indicators that save parameters can be bought cheap, compared to G1000, but flight parameter recording devices cost more than a lot of airplanes.

I think they are looking into this to see how it was configured. I don't think it records like a FDR does.
