My neighbor says I have too many. They never leave my yard, aren't barkers, and are kept healthy & happy.

It sounds like your dogs are well cared for, you can afford them, you have room for them and they are "healthy & happy" So as long as you're sure they don't bark or do anything to annoy the neighbor (dog hater) then have as many as you have time for. People have a tendancy to call those with more than 2 dogs "hoarders" I love dogs and as long as I can give them each attention & love, take to the vet when needed, feed the best food & treats, then I will have as many as I like.
Tell your neighbor to put up a higher fence.

It depends on the individual. Some can manage many dogs, others struggle to care for one properly.

However, most places do have limit laws, so be nice to your neighbor so she doesn't call AC on you!

I think limit laws are stupid and do nothing to stop hoarding or the people with one dog they don't bother to take care of. By law, I can only have 3 dogs, but my neighbors have 8 kids and not only is that ok, but they were even given a free house!

Depends on acherage and what not, people do hord animals and when to much is to much is when their house is over run with animals and they keep coming, I would say healthy number per person in the house would be at least 3 but if you have a massive yard and a massive home and they are trained and well kept you could only have a smuch as you can handle. Becarful you dont become the "Cat Lady"

Too many for me is when I don't have the room to comfortably haul them all in case of some emergency where we'd have to evacuate.
Too many for others who have no worries of such things, would be the number of dogs that DON'T get enough one on one attention from you on a daily basis.
They each have their own unique personalities and each needs to feel special and loved as well as their other needs met.
My husband and I have discussed this on many occasions. We're both dog lovers and he wants more. But he puts no time and effort into vet visits, grooming exercise or training. That's all left to me.I know without doubt I can keep 1 more under control on walks.I have the time to deal with training and grooming and we can afford the added vet bills. And we also have the room to accomodate another.Any more than that tho and I'd not be able to properly care for or give the one on one attention to each that they demand because I'd be spending all my time cleaning up after them.

If your neighbor says you have too many, then I'd bet a million dollars they are indeed barkers. And yes, you do have too many.

Side question: Why are dog owners incapable of hearing the barking of their dogs, while everyone else can hear them from two blocks away?

You must be thoughtful of your neighbors as well. In a residential area 3 dogs should be the limit.

If you don't have enough time to give each dog some attention most everyday, then you have too many. They need love and nurturing just like children - and grownups, too.

Too many dogs is when you can't give each dog the attention it craves and deserves. When you can't feed each dog properly or give proper vetinary care.

Check the city or township you live in. (The police dept will know) if there is an ordinance for the amount of dogs/cats you can own.
Hope it helps.
