If she doesn't already have 1 get her a cell phone. If she does you could get her a pink razr phone or whatever she likes, an ipod, CD's, a new computer that she can use to keep in touch with friends and do homework. Or just take her to the mall & let her pick out what she wants, within reason.

I gave my niece that age money and I took her to the store of her choice to spend it, then we grabbed lunch together. I had a great time bonding with her, and she got a trip to get what she wanted without having to wait on a parent to do it. You never know - just because she doesn't do girly stuff doesn't mean she's not getting interested in it. Mine just suddenly started getting interested in manicures and lip gloss - with her hooded sweatshirts and jeans and tees. Oh - her other favorite gift - a hamster.

Depending on the event, I would go with a gift certicate for a store or restaurant that she really likes or even movie certificates are great.

gift cards are easy, i'm taking my 13 year old neice shopping instead to pick out her own gift. see if u can go in with a few family members to buy a big gift.

Is she artsy? get her some prisma colored pencils
is she outdoorsy? Get her a petzl tikka headlamp from rei
is she confused... get her a nice leather journal and sweet writing pen
does she have an ipod? get her an itunes giftcard
if all else fails get her a gift certificate to old navy or american eagle
