For our universe to exist, something must transcend every law of physics we know. It had a beginning, thus something came before it. Even if you say our universe came from another universe, something came before that still. You don't get around the problem of something needing to kick off the whole process ever.

How can science claim mastery over faith when the most important questions will never be answered?

It's important to realize that science has not disproved the existence of God. It just remains neutral because there is no proof of its existence or lack thereof.

You have a point on the beginning of the universe; something has to start it. But it goes both ways. If there's a God, then who created the God? What was before the entity that created God? What about before that?

It's a fractal answer, where the bigger picture is just a repeating pattern of the smaller picture. We're still putting the peices of the puzzle together - we don't even fully understand dark matter, dark energy, and quantum physics. Theres a whole mess of questions that science has created. I believe science has created more confusion than anything else.

In the future we will know more - its just like how they used to speculate about whether or not the earth was flat. No way they could ever have possibly proved it or unproved it until we circum-navigated the globe.

It may take perhaps tens of thousands of years, but we will find our answer by travelling first out of the solar system, then out of the galaxy. Its the only way for us to gain better perspective on ourselves. Of course we still will have questions then, but we'll be closer.

I don't think scientists claim "mastery" over anything. They research and discover. The problem arises when their discoveries conflict with the beliefs of others. I don't recall very many instances where scientists really attack any beliefs. They publish their findings and those who believe otherwise turn the information into a catalyst for an argument.

The christian belief is an evolution of pagan beliefs. The early christians discovered that by adopting pagan dates and incorporating them into the christian theology, more pagans could be gathered into the flock. This is an attack on another belief. Underhanded and deliberate. Christmas? Easter? Not christian dates. Pagan dates. Christ wasn't born anywhere near December.

Your first sentence explains the difference between those who need to believe in a higher power and those who don't. "Every law of physics we know." First off, it's an incorrect statement and also you are inferring that because we don't know right now, we must believe that a higher power made it happen. At one time we thought the sun was a god but now we know different.

Can the beginning of the universe be any different?

That's why even though I had never been to church for most of my life I was an agnostic until I became a Christian in my 40's. I used to tell people back in my BC (before Christ) days that Atheists were stupid to believe that there wasn't a God because not only couldn't you prove that there wasn't a God you also couldn't explain how matter just came to be. Saying that it was always here didn't make any sense to me and it still doesn't because everything has to come from something in this universe. Now I don't call Atheists stupid, I just pray for them to realize that God is the uncaused first cause of all creation.

How can you say the most important questions will never be answered until we have the tools to even try? We still haven't even finished figuring out THIS universe, let alone the cosmos.

You presume there is a god because you need a first cause. QUantum physics allows for universes to spring from nothing -- and by nothing, I'm talking about quantum vacuum. This quantum vacuum (some refer to it as the inflaton) ALWAYS existed, just as you presume your god did. It, not a deity, is the first cause.

I have two comments:
1) Why do you allow that God could have always existed, but the laws of physics can't have always existed?
2) Suppose you are right, and there must have been a creator. Does that in way prove that the Bible is correct? Perhaps there is a creator, but the understanding of the creator obtained from the Bible is flawed?

God, yes, religions, no. To me, God is God of nature and the universe, the original "that which just is and always has been", but man does not hold any special place in the grand scheme of things over any other thing in the universe. Elevating ourselves above that is hubris.

I agree. Narrow minded scientists can continue to call us ignorant, but I believe in a higher power. Some extremely smart people are Christians. Science will never prove everything. Good for you. You have discovered the truth. Try going to a church and finding out more.

Peace! God Bless!

We don't know every answer to every question. We are still in our infancy with regard to the universe. I don't know how it was formed but I do know that whatever the answer is, it is based in science and not in some bizarre fairy tale. Just by stating God must have created it because you can't comprehend any other answer doesn't make it so. That is intellectual laziness.

whether you believe in science or in my case God (i am a Christian) you have to have faith ........ science has thoeries ....... that does not mean it is a law of science .......... there is a difference .......... a theory is just that ........ i theory ........ its a really neat idea that nobody can prove or disprove yet .
when you try to describe a creature capable of making the universe .... you begin to use language that is very religious ...........
the creature has to be timeless......... to him time is nothing .......... he must be eternal ........... he must not have a physical body because of the restraints it would have ... so if it is not a physical body ........ perhaphs you could refer to it as a "spiritual" body ........... to create a universe this creature has to be outside the laws of this universe ...... he has to be more powerful than then total sum of his creation ........... it is by his very will ........ his very thought that it was created ............
whether you accept the belief that this creature sent his son ( who we call Jesus) to die for you and allow you a place in heaven to be with God is your choice ............. its great that you are asking questions ......... never lose that . God calls us to have faith ... but not blind faith .......... he tells us if we look for him he will reveal himself to us in our lives, hearts, and the miracles he performs around us in the lives and hearts of others........

well maybe, but maybe it's not God who did that, maybe it is some kind of life form or an alien that was so freaking intelligent and decided to experience his intelligence by making the universe, plantes, etc. and succeeded in doing so....did that sound right?
