#1 it is not safe
#2 I don't know what your profession is, but most likely it isn't going to give you "on the job skills"
Find out how safe it is, and find out if your contract can be a limited contract.
Like a 3 year contract, that way, you can come back w/ enough money for:
college,
business,
paying college debts
Find out everything.
Do you get vacations?
Do you ever get to go back home, if so how often.
Just remember, being a translator is going to "waste" 3 years of your life for money.
Do you need money for something?
Being a translator isn't going to be a long-term career or profession. It's just "quick" money.
You can't spend the rest of your life as a translator, it won't get you ahead in life.
A good factor is marriage. If you're married, then you're relationship will be stalled. Here it's important to know if you get time off during those years, time off to be with your wife.
If you aren't married, then you're going to lose 3 years, during which you could have found your perfect soul mate.
Being a translator is going to improve your language abilities, but I don't know how important that is to you, or to your other or "real" profession.
ok, two more things left.
#1 Being a translator is going to accelerate you towards having enough money for retirement.
#2 Your name, it seems is Ali. Don't tell me, but it amkes a difference whether or not arabic is your first or second language. Were you born in America, or in an arabic speaking country? If Arabic is your first language, then being a translator isn't going to improve you arabic. If Arabic is your second language, then being a translator, IS going to improve your abilities.
It's your choice.
Always save money, even if you don't want to retire.
Remember IT IS DANGEROUS!!!!
This matters especially if you are married.
If you have kids, then forget about it.
Make a will. either way.

Yet, some gay enlisted man who was a translator over there was discharged for being gay. Now the government has to pay for private translators at however much they offered you. I don't know how much you make, but I'm assuming if you're fluent in another language that your intelligent enough to get a good paying job. That was good thinking; fire the cheap guy and hire some expensive private citizens to fill the gap.
I'd say, if it isn't in Baghdad, go for it. Most of the country is pretty stable. If it's in Baghdad, where all the **** is going down, I'd evaluate how much I like having my head attached to my body.

You'll probably have to contact the military itself to get an answer for this. I kind of doubt the military would provide protection, but maybe you can get Murtha to arrange something. I seem to recall that he helped the Code Pinkos out when you guys sent aid to the enemy in Fallujah. As an aside, though... drop the "peaceful charity worker" schtick. If you're a Code Pinko, that's just a lie and you're being insulting expecting other people to believe it. Edit... no, it's not "one or two bad apples". It's your leadership. It's the protests outside military hospitals, outside recruiting stations (and illegally denying other people access to that recruiting station), etc.

My father was also offered a position like this because he speaks arabic. He, however turned it down as the job entails going with the troops to the front lines and being the first target the enemy shoots at. You will get a bonus of i think 16,000 IF you make it back alive. If you intend on joining the army you will definintly get paid more doing this but if getting shot at is not your thing I would turn it down.

Would you do this for the money or the challange? Married? Children to think about? Is 5x your current salary enough?

Well the reason they are paying alot of money is that there is danger in the job. If you are willing to accept the danger and wish to help your country - which is an admirable trait, then I think it would be something you may want to consider.

go for it, but you might not live very long. its a shame the military contractors over there are making the big bucks while the troops are getting the shaft.

Good money, tax free, but you can't have any sort of weapon. Contractors are supposed to be noncombatants and noncoms do not get a weapon. Good money, but very dangerous and no way to fight back.

What type of places will you be working? If you are scared of/don't want to be shot at maybe not. The money does sound good.

Do it , if money is so important to you ? But don't expect sympathy from anyone when you are held hostage and shown on TV before your execution like the others !
