If you get your car towed for illegally parking why is it that you can only pay in cash???
Is it so they don't have to report it to the government??

I don't know what you guys are talking about.. I've never delt with any towing companies that accept anything but cash when you were towed for parking...............................................

Most SHOULD take cards - but some have probably gotten burned with bum checks and faked credit cards - so they play it safe.
On the other hand, some wildcatters (independent towers) might not report all their cash earnings, so...

Put yourself in their shoes. If you just towed a car and the owner was pissed about it, would you take a check so they can bounce or stop payment on it?
And who is to say that the credit card is actually good at 3 AM?
Cash is always safest and if you were towed by order of the police department, then there's a paper trail that can be followed.

Most likely it is because of many bad checks and fraudulent credit cards they have received, cash is the only guarantee that you have paid before they release your car.

Most will take a credit card at least and many don't take checks because they don't have any quick way of varifying that you have funds to cover payment, plus it's faster than dealing with checks and credit cards.
