My sister just found a gross gigantic scab like thing on her chihuahua's neck. The dog's scab-like thing is about an inch long, and there was a tick attached. What kind of tick can cause this large amount of swelling? Should we worry about it, does he need a vet?

Ticks, especially in dogs, will only engorge for a few days and then fall off. Pull the tick out, no lighters here, just get tweezers and gently pull with NO twisting motion. I am not too sure about the amount of swelling that you have, is the scab on top of the skin? The only real disease attributed to ticks is Lyme Disease and it is an internal disease.

It is up to you, since you are there and I cannot see it, but I would get the tick out, and wait and see. The scab might be from him scratching at it. What part of the country are you in?

Any kind of tick can cause that. You may want to go to your vet for tests ofcourse. I hope your pet is up to date on his or hers vaccianations.; The tick must have died and you must not have known it was there untill now, peel the scab off and look at it, if it looks infected consult your vet. Keep an eye on water and food intake and your pets moods for the next week.

oh for gods sake, just pull the tick out and put some stuff on the scab and keep an eye on it. these people act like they live in a bubble for gods sake........im sure the vet will appreciate the business but all hes (shes) gonna do is what I said above, plus try to sell some vaccinations etc.
