It means that good intents often end up with bad results. That one cannot expect thanks and successful reward for the good they do, and that good actions are often regretted later. It means what it says.

It's a very pescamistic remark.

It means that some people take kindness for being weak and once you have done a good deed for them they usually return the favor by kicking you in the teeth.

Often times doing good deeds can place one at great risk.
That is my interpitation.

It's a cynical idea. It means people are naturally mean-spirited and it's a waste of time to try to be good to them. In other words, it tells you you should not waste your time helping people because people are ingrates.
It's not my personal belief. It's just what that says.
