i've had this since i was very young. some nights when i'm really tired, before i fall asleep, my body goes into full paralysis. I am fully aware and awake, breathing, but i cannot move a single muscle. i get really scared if this happens when i'm face down for fear i will suffocate on my pillow. i may last for several minutes before i'm able to move again. no doctors could tell me what it was. it feels like my body went to sleep before my subconcious did. what could this be?

I had the same experience only 1X when I was a teen, and it haunted me for years. I chalked my episode up to a bad dream, but it was exactly how you described, except I was waking up, my body was not. All, I can tell you is the human body has many complexities. From what I understand about sleeping patterns are the following: do not go to sleep when you are over tired, get enough of it, and try to have routine sleep. This way your body will have the urge to sleep and wake up with out any "Twilight Zone" side affects. This may be a little vague, but it's the best I can offer. If you would like to go a step further, local hospitals and universities do sleep studies. I was going to be a guinea pig, but for now have my sleep under control. Good night!

That happened to me once and I really thought I was dying. I woke up from a bad dream and I couldn't move or do anything. Glad to know someone else experienced this as I've never told anyone before. Sounds crazy doesn't it? Anyhow, a few of the answers were good and I'm glad I ran across your question and found out some more info.

I listen to a talk show at night called "Coast to Coast". They deal with many different unusual topics. There have been times that people have called in regarding this. They also have a web-site and email. Perhaps they can put you in connection with some help from some of these people. Their stories seem to be very similar. It helps to hear that other people experience this and may have some suggestions for you.

Not sure what it is exactly but I have had something similar like a dream where I swear I am awake and that there is an intruder in my house, I can hear them and I'm awake but I cant move my body, so I just lie there helpless! Scary stuff!!

this happens when for some reason you wake up in between shifting of sleep cycles.. REM and nonRem. Rem means you are in a deep sleep and non rem means you are not.. though out the nite your body cycles in and out of these and for some reason people like yourself wake up during the shift and experience paralysis.. i dont' know too much about it but now that you know a little more then you did perhaps you can look it up and find more info on the web, which is what i'm going to do just out of curiosty.

its called thinking yourself to sleep. its ok. you have the gift of being "awake" when you are really asleep. I used to call it the point of no return.
