Cheapest budget is about $11 per day.
Use Lonely Planet to find the cheapest and best places.
Bangkok Kaosan Road.
Hundreds of cheap places all around Thailand, and hundreds of places to see.
Beaches in the south, mountains in the north, ancient capitals like Sukhotai, and Ayuttayai,
temples like Doi Suthep, Chiang mai, and elsewhere, the River Mekhong at the Golden Triangle etc. etc.

US1 = 38 Bahts. Relatively cheap to travel and live here. It all depends on much you have with you, how much you want to spent. Wide selections of accomodations, shopping and food; to suit all kinds of budget. Bahts 600 accomodation, or Bahts 3000 for an international 5-star hotel. Noodles by the road at 30 Bahts and the same fetches 200 Bahts at the restaurant or hotel. Designer jeans or their copies at Bahts 600 perhaps. Your choice :-)

Suggest hopping on one of the city tours. They cover major tourist attractions in a short time. Elephant trekking and Floating Market (if you're from the city) will be an experience. Enjoy!

When you get into Bangkok, head to Khaosan Road! It's the back packers area with a lot of good cheap places to stay and loads of restaurtants and stuff. Basically, once you're there, you'll meet loads of other travellers and will find out whatever you need to know from talking to people. You don't need to really do much planning before going there, just go and everything will work itself out. Believe me! I've bean there heaps of times and it's never been a problem finding cheap anything!

It's all a budget. Stay at the Malysia Hotel just off Rama 4 near Lupinie park for about 12-14 US dollars a night incl. breakfast. Safe, clean good location. 24 hour restraunt and pool. Shop at the night market. Eat a streetside stands for pennies. Ride the busses and sky train and see all kinds of things for free.

agree with most of what's said here, but the US dollar has tumbled thanks to trade deficit with China. It's now closer to 36 baht to the dollar (at least that's the best you'll do at an exchange shop).
