this is an old Disney movie about two adolescent girls wreaking havok in an all girls catholic school run by nuns. The more troublesome of the girls, Mary, played by Haley Mills, elects upon graduation to stay and become a nun. Her best friend is shocked by this and wails to the sister superior,"How did you get her to cave in like that?" The sister superior replies, "You know Mary, and nobody on this earth could ever get her to cave in to anything. She CHOSE, and I would rather have one like her who chose than a hundred who cave."

why don't Christians believe this anymore--or if they do, why do they keep trying to get people to cave in instead?

So many good, well thought out answers--although, Fireball's sounds kind of threatening........not trying to join in with all her bashers, but it does

what you failed to see through the movie was the fact that they WERE taught and shown the way - remmeber mary's penance for smoking cigars i think - not the "pots" but rather - prayer. the moother superior saw something in Mary that made her have Mary think and ponder.
in the vvarious Rcc convents - they are not pushed, they have to come and stay of their own accord. pushing would be making them do something against their will. teaching and showing people how to listen andhear God's Will is quite different.

PS - can't believe anyone else even knew that movie! when i saw the question i thought - no way and sure enough.... thanks for the fun memories - i'm going to have to pull it out of the shelves and watch it one rainy day!

I understand your point. I do not know anyone who "caved" to become a Christian. For me it took a lot of things to happen for me to make a choice and even when I came to know Jesus personally it was still a choice.

In this day and age I don't see many people jumping on the Jesus band wagon. There is however this new thing where political people will ad "Christian" to their title trying to be a real American. I think the term is "Conservative Christians." That's cool if they keep GOD first in their lives but many of them know more about politics then GOD it seems. Oh Well that's really not what you asked.

May GOD richly bless you.

How can they know without someone to teach, how can they choose without having been shown the path in the first place??

She was taught this way all along, even through her phase of rebellion, and when she was done with her rebellion, she had a foundation to make a choice by. Those with no foundation will never be able to stand ot make a choice- we follow God's command to preach the truth and share the gospel so that people can hear it - then their choice is their responsibility- but I will keep preaching it through the rebellion and pray when the rebellion is done, they will have what they need to make the right choice.

It is not about caving, it is about having the knowledge and foundation needed when they come to maturity.

I totally understand what you're saying, and it makes sense.
Many Christians do have the attitude of wanting people to 'cave'. They use a lot of tactics to accomplish this that sometimes are quite offensive, like the so-called church in Kansas (westboro baptist) that preaches how much God hates sinners and that they're going to hell. Some aren't twisted like that, and they preach about God's love, but they can go about it the wrong way.

As a Christian, I know that it is necessary to share my faith. Jesus told us to preach the gospel, so I don't believe I can just keep quiet about my faith. Unfortunately I can't be so concerned with offending people that I keep quiet about what I believe, because I honestly do want people to accept Christ.
But I can think about how I share my faith, and be respectful of others. I think you made a good point. I know I wouldn't want to know that someone had accepted Christ because they were pressured and thought, 'yeah, maybe it's the right thing to do'. I would prefer to know that someone had thought about things and really knew in their heart that it was what they wanted.

I don’t know how many cave in to God. It seems a strange concept.

But I agree each person must choose. God is patient. He’s willing to wait for us to come to him in our own time and in our own way. The only one we hurt by waiting is our self because we are denying this wonderful, loving relationship.

I wonder about those who come to God out of fear, which may be what you mean, those that are afraid if they don’t get saved they will spend an eternity in hell?

I wonder, if their concept of God is all wrapped up in fear, can they ever truly know the wonderful loving relationship I was talking about.

That was a favorite movie of mine, because I'm such a big Haley Mills fan, but I was very disturbed by the ending.

I love that old movie. Nobody on this earth could ever get someone to cave in to anything. They have to choose, and we'd rather have one choose than a hundred who cave..................

Because everyone's frantic. I agree it would be far more dignified and true to the Christian spirit if, by witnessing Christian lives, others felt the urge to accept Christ.

Oh my WORD, I remember that movie... I watched it MANY many years ago. I remember being just as confused as the best friend, though.

But I concur with you, it would be nice if people weren't expected to cave so much. Let everyone find their own path.
