It's a pretty broad matter. But, there are two things, one a person must do, and another one a person must NOT do, to be nominated for heaven:
1. Have faith in all basic beliefs of Islam. (being Muslim)
2. NOT do shirk. (associating someone/something with Allah)
In Qur'an: "[4:116] Surely Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, and He forgives what is besides this to whom He pleases; and whoever associates anything with Allah, he indeed strays off into a remote error."
Also, a person has to do good deeds and avoid all major sins. Good deeds include all obligatory religious duties, recommended duties, fulfilling others rights and voluntary deeds.
In Qur'an: "[2:25] And convey good news to those who believe and do good deeds, that they shall have gardens in which rivers flow; whenever they shall be given a portion of the fruit thereof, they shall say: This is what was given to us before; and they shall be given the like of it, and they shall have pure mates in them, and in them, they shall abide."
[2:112] Yes! whoever submits himself entirely to Allah and he is the doer of good (to others) he has his reward from his Lord, and there is no fear for him nor shall he grieve.

believe in only one god and do good, this is how you go to heaven in "Koran" which is the holy book of Muslims, because this is the main concept of Islam. But still we can't decide who goes to heaven and who doesn't, it's Allah's call. You do what you can and Allah is just.

Pray 5 times a day, follow the five pillars of Islam, do pilgrimage ATLEAST one time in your life..

in Islam only GOOD DEEDS GET U TO HEAVEN, not killing or suicide -- and this applies TO ALL OF THE MANKIND NOT just MUSLIMS..
each and everyone of us will be judged by our DEEDS. so hope to see u in Heaven sometime. Allah has always brought those Righteous and honored them.

a true muslim will always be patient, forgiving, kind, and enduring. a haughty, disrespectful and harsh person cant be a muslim. u should tolerate and be pateint until the last breathe of ur tolerance.

as far as MATYRDOM IS CONCERNED -- even a WOMAN who DIES during LABOR is a MATYR IN ISLAM.
UNJUST fighting and killing of someone is a TRANGRESSION AND SIN in ISLAM. but when people attack my family, my country, my country people -- then it is my responsibility to try making PEACE with the enemy. but if the enemy denies my peace and freindship and is still hellebnt on hurting people i love or even me, then i need to take a stand and SELF-DEFEND. so in this case, fighting which is a sin will become permissible.
