if I save them to a external drive how do i save my playlists and album art?

Back up the Music Folder in your Home Folder to a CD/DVD. Once you have re-installed OS X, simply drag the contents of the Music folder on your CD/DVD into the Music folder in your new Home folder. Once that is done, just open iTunes. Make sure you update iTunes before you open it, though. If you're using iTunes 7 and you re-install OS X, it's likely that you'll be using iTunes 6 and it might not read your iTunes 7 library correctly.

Album art is embedded in the file so dont worry. The playlist will be gone no matter what. Go to

>>Back up library

to back it up

you could use a jump drive if you can get one that is big enough.. or you could burn your music on a dvd as files... or you could go out and buy an external hard drive to store your music on permantly or temporarly.. choice is yours my friend =)

Burn them onto a cd disc.

send them to a memorystick or any usb memory sucket thing

or just send it to ur mp3 or ipod =D
