Torrents divide each file into a bunch of pieces and download each piece from a different server at once. This is a highly efficient way to download files that are in demand. To the second part of your question, Yes and No, Yes you can and yes if it is a copyrighted peice of music/software you can be prosecuted No you do not want to download copyrighted music or software.

Hello,
Torrents are a form of downloading, and you can download almost anything that is a torrent. A .torrent file is just another fomat which is opened by a certain program which uses this file to download the things you want. To download them you will need a program such as azureus or utorrent, and you can download them from many sites. Some that I highly recommend are www.demonoid.com or www.mybittorrent.com.

Torrents are "seed files" that are used with BitTorrent to download a specific file or files.
You can download practically ANY FILE that has a "seed" for it, including software, movies & music... but it can border on copyrights, so use responsibly.
