My sister just had a baby and she wants me to be the godmother. I am a Witch, and my sister is a born-again Christian. She's accepting of my beliefs and they don't bother her. We've been best friends all our lives. But will the Priest go ahead with the baptism knowing I am a Witch? What if he doesn't? What should I do?

I'm just saying IF he asks, I am not going to lie. I'm not a liar. And the purpose of Godparents is NOT to teach religion to the child. The purpose is to take guardianship of the child if the parent cannot or in the event of the parent's death.

Paul, I don't understand your question. Why would I want to be the child's godmother? Well, honestly, it's because I LOVE the child. And Witches do believe in God, alright?

Answer to maiohwmai's question: She's really big on the idea of raising her child in a way that is open to diversity. She wants to make sure he's exposed to many cultures, languages, religions, interests, etc. And she knows I don't force my beliefs on other people, but she's open-minded enough to learn about them and let her child learn as well.

So, Barbara M, what you're saying is that baptism is about the church, and not the child?

Anyone can baptize anyone else, the witch shouldn't be a problem, their are many people that would perform the baptism if this insecure priest will not.

well, most Christians don't baptize babies, it is NOT Biblical. Priests belong to the Catholic religion which ironically is closer to Wiccan / paganism than it is to Christianity.
Catholicism and those religions rooted from it are the ones that baptize babies (probably a pagan oriented practice also)
When a baby is baptized, most Catholic priests will not allow nonCatholic godparents. Some churches are more liberal and they either don't care or don't check- some are rigid about it though- your sister should ask her priest.

in response to your addition- the reason some are rigid about it is because the Godparents ARE considered to be a major influence regarding religion and spirituality in the childs life and if for some reason you did take over guardianship, you would be the direct influence- this is the reasoning anyway.

Apparently you have no idea what a godparent is supposed to be. Too many people simply regard it as a ceremonial thing. In fact, the godparent is responsible for helping the parents raise the child in the faith, and to ensure that the child is raised in the faith should the parents die or otherwise become unavailable. In the Catholic Church such a person simply would not be accepted as a godparent, regardless of their relationship to the parents. Baptism is not primarily a social occasion. It is a spiritual occasion, a sacred sacrament of the Church.

They are not supposed to--The God Parents are to be practicing Catholics. I spoke too soon--I see that it is not a Catholic baptism so he might go ahead and do that but, the roll of a God Parent is to make sure that the child is brought up in a Christian way and if you are a witch it would be very questionable.

I find it hard to believe that your sister just accepts your beliefs and it does not bother her. If she was truly Christian she would be upset that you are not of the faith and pray for you because she would know that Jesus is the only way to salvation. However, saying that, she could still opt to have you as godmother. How does she feel about you teaching her child, your neice/nephew wichcraft?

Being a born again christian myself, and really, no offense to you, your sister should check back with her belief system. As far as I know, no pastor AT ALL, would do this. Unless of course you're talking about a Catholic Church which would be much more laxed. Personally though on your part, why would you want to be a "GOD"mother, or anything relating to god, if you are a witch???

bummer your a witch with those silly beliefs, do you really believe that drumming and dancing around a circle is the true religion, if you do then you are misguided. early wiccas practiced human sacrifice, they have found remains in bogs to prove this, they killed humans for the earth, read the entire history of your religion not just a barnes and noble version made by some moron trying to make a buck,, really study it and you will see the light, i am a person of no religion but have studied and been to the middle east and europe to study religions, you really need to ssek the real truth before you mess up your kids with any kind of religion

Why wouldn't he? It's another 'child for god', right? I don't really think they could care less.

why would you even tell the priest? some things are best left unsaid.......

2006-10-12 15:08:45 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

probably not, because as the "god-mother" you won't be able to help teach the christian faith to the child, no offense, but you will serve no purpose in becoming a god-mother, becuase you aren't a christian>
