Okay JW... you were being abit goofy by the sounds of it but there was no harm intended by you. Teachers don't like students to say things like..."you lied" even in a joking way. It's unfortunate because sometimes you think they are able to take a sarcastic remark and you mean no harm but then wham... you get a conduct referral. You did the right thing by going back to your teacher and saying sorry and offering to help out with something for her but unfortunately she has moved on with this and figures it is done. You got the conduct referral and she figures you got the message. Lesson learned. You did all you can do to work it out. It is important that you explain to your parents that your intentions were not to upset her but rather joke with her. If you tell your parents that you totally took responsibility for your actions and went back to her and apologized and you know not to joke in that way again, then your parents should be reasonable with you. I am not sure if you get in trouble much but if you don't then they should be decent with you.
You definitely need to tell the parent that is most reasonable :-)
Don't sign the note yourself because schools have previous signatures of your parents on file and with the least bit of doubt they check for a real signature. It will only get worse if you do that. And your parents will freak out.
Good luck.

Talk to the principle first. Let he/she decide whethe or not the teacher was right to give you the slip. If they decide that you will have to show your parents, then unfortunately you have to suck it up and just do it. Make sure your parents hear about it form you, and not form the school.

You could act very defensively by starting the conversation with "Mom/dad, I was unfairly treated at school. I made that joke in class, and I don't feel like I deserved this slip."

personally, i think the teacher should have given you some indication of his/her dissaproval before punishing you.

Well, it sounds like your teacher might have been having a bad day and it just rubbed her the wrong way. Or maybe you make jokes A LOT and she takes it as a way of insulting her...??? Anyway, I wouldn't sweat it. Just try to explain to your parents that you were kidding and that you were grown-up enough to go and talk to the teacher and apologize. Invite them to call the teacher to make sure you apologized.
