Red Hat Linux... not because it is the best but because it is relatively easy to use, is very popular so there's lots of people in forums that can help you out for a specific problem and finally because many companies are using it as a server platform... which means if you get used to Red Hat Linux as a hobby at home, you can take that experience with you to a new job in the IT field.

Linux is an OS but it has hundreds of distributions because it is open source. So you can try lots of them, i have Fedora Core 5 and i like it, all Linux distros basccilly work the same, some are just focused on certain area of computing try this site 4 a comparison
