I am trying to build a portfolio that I can have on hand at all times to show my work and try to get the word out that I am trying to get into photography. I also know that another good way to get your name out there and for people to see your work is to get a web-site. Have any of you ever done your own web-site, like homestead or ready web? It's where you build your own web-site. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

Yahoo's got a few web-page deal with geocities don't they?

It's not very fancy, but it's easy to start with, and it'd be good free practice

I have done a number of web sites using yahoo geocities and they would be a good way to get started. They cost nothing if you are willing to have ads on your page, or you can pay for the site and have your own name and no ads. They are easy to do.
I have a photography site, mostly candid photos, it is not very professional, but some day I will sit down and redo it better. Check it out if you like. http://www.geocities.com/thepicturesman

I did my own website not too long ago. I went with Yahoo. They were pretty cheap and you can't beat how easy their site builder tool is to use. I just set up a geocities site but unless you pay for it it's not the best, at least not for people being able to look at your photos without exceeding your data transfer limit. I have some pointers I learned along the way that I could share with you if you would like. They would take up way too much space here. But you are more than welcome to email me if you would like at mshort1974 at yahoo dot com.

One thing I noticed is that it is very hard to be found on a search engine. The keywords you use are extremely important and there are hundreds of thousands of photography sites out there to compete with. Depending on how you rank on said search engines, you may never be found.

I would highly recommend getting some business cards made up with your website address on them to have handy to give people. In the end I more or less just use my website for an online portfolio for those people I may meet when I don't have my regular portfolio handy for them to look at. That is, until I figure out how to get top rankings on search engines.

Best of luck to you. And if you decide to go with Yahoo I would be more than happy to help you out. A nice little plug for Yahoo, isn't it? lol. But they are the only site I am familiar with, and I wouldn't be much help for any others. :)

I've been building my own websites since high school - I don't use any tools to drop and drag, I actually write out HTML code - It may not look as nice as a page made with FrontPage, but it's a hobby so whatever. I started using Yahoo! Geocities and just upgraded to my own domain from there. Personally I always liked the tools they offered.

If you have a yahoo ID, you can try out geocities for free. Good luck!!

You actually have a lot of possibilites, limited only by your imagination.

First, check out most popular photoblogs (amateurs posting images chronologicaly), they get up to 50000 hits a month. Quite a nice way to get your name out. Here are a few to get you started:

http://chromasia.com
http://wvs.topleftpixel.com

There is also the Canon page with the most notable photographers in the world. Click on each of their profiles, you can most of the time get their website. Check it out, learn, make your own. Here is the link for that page:

The next link is the American association (I'm only assuming you are from the States) of photography. Pick a category you want to do photography in, and check out the links of the photographers in it.

I don't know much about making your own site, but there is a great public site called photographica.org where you can post your shots and get comments from other artists. It's all free, and very simple to use. the other photographers there are very knowledgable and can probably answer some of your questions!

i would suggest you join deviantart. it's like myspace for artists like us.

you can put up scanned photos of your artworks, and other artists can comment on your artworks. you also have the option of selling prints of your photos, i dont do that deal though coz my mom won't let me. but yah...

then once you've gathered a lot of friends from deviantart, slowly work your way to making a website.

because then they'd know your art and they can recommend your website to other artists and other people they know. :)

this is my deviantart page.

flash based sites work out good - there are lot of good templates available commercially and you can develop on it with minimal knowledge of flash.
