You need something to either warm it up in there like red...very dramatic or go for sophistication and do gray...a different shade or even a brown like chocolate. I've seen that a lot on the decorating shows lately. Black, grey and red...or brown. Depending on your style of furniture or how brave you are.

Forget the Kitchen, you are doing the liv room. Red is a good color for grey and black as an accent color.

Most of those colors you named are considered neutrals. You could put any color you want with those colors. Let's take green for example. You get some green throw pills on the couch and paint your walls green it makes the pills "pop" and it goes with gray, tan and black. Pretty much any color will go with the colors you already have going on.

depends on the mood you would like the room to have, almost any color will go with the neutral grays, white which will may the furniture stand out, grays will give that monochromatic look or your favorite colors for a brite room

Earth tones could be really nice.

Try out behr.com, they have a really neat virtual room thing that lets you try out different paint colors, and even gives advice for trim colors, accent walls, etc.

A rich bold deep dark red would like really classy in my opinion. With splashes of yellow as a contrast.
