There's a girl I want to ask out. I'm not asking for advice on how to do that, ot anything. What I need is a fun place to take her on the South Side of Chicago. We're both into music. She loves opera and blues. Theatre is also a good bet. And food, of course. Does anyone know any good place that don't require a reservation?

I doubt that you'll find opera or blues -- or theatre for that matter -- on the south side, UNLESS you search for community theatre. That, actually, might work out all right. You're not paying a million bucks, you're supporting the community and/or up-and-coming artists. Save your dough and take her out to eat afterwards. Spend your money on the chow. You'll find plenty of places.

But I'm getting ahead of myself --- for community theatre check:
1. local churches
2. Moraine Valley Community College
3. your local library?

Isn't there a Beverly Arts Center? They could definitely point you in the right direction on that one. And if there was no theatre to be had there might be an independent film screening. Even if it's truly bad you'd sill have something to talk about.

Food: my favorite place that doesn't take reservations is Chuck's on 79th and Central. It was closed for a while for remodeling/expansion or a fire but it's reopened. I haven't been back there so I don't know how much the menu has changed but when I WAS there I had downtown food at South Side prices. I'd still recommend it.

There's another place, but I don't remember WHERE exactly it is: It's called Frank-o-Nello's or something like that. Higher class. Dress nicer. They take reservations but reservations are NOT required. It's in the vicinity of 111th and Pulaski.

Oh, there's also a totally awesome Chinese place --- Chi-Tung. They are a neighborhood institution and their food, the restaurant, the ambiance, all of it easily rivals if not beats any restaurant in Chinatown and is certainly better than going downtown to Big Bowl or some kinda wanna-be place like that. You can find them pretty easily (don't get me wrong, Big Bowl has its place, but for the REAL DEAL, go to Chi-Tung).

The south side gets maligned for being blue collar and without culture but don't buy into that stereotype. There are a LOT of good places down there.

Oh, if you're just going super casual during the day you simply HAVE to go to Wonder-Burger. They're on Kedzie at 103rd? 111th? Something like that. Again, you can find them in the book.

Good luck and have a GREAT time!

if you want to impress this girl, you will take her to a restaurant that is hard to get in. That requires a reservation. A place that has good food and have a warm and nice atmosphere. That you can enjoy each others company. However you mentioned that the girl is into musics. Now that's a different venue. You need a restaurant that have a live band. Also bring flowers, that's an A+. Goodluck!

well, this may be out of touch, when I was with my girl , now my wife, knowing her for 7 years before marriage, and did not live in, she knew what I liked and vise verse. So, one day, we got cooler, food etc. We went into the mountains. large pine trees, birds chirping, and had battery operated radio, of which I placed on other side of stream, loud enough for us both to hear, I had a hard time, but rolled an old log onto a ridge, where we listened to the stream, music, and had a view of the lake. After a while, a deer came up behind us, she was amazed, we talked, ate, sure, kissed but nothing further, we went deep into our feelings, we still do that cause was best time she and I agree was our time alone so different from our daily living, it put us both in a new world. Married now 40 yrs. good luck

go to the Chicago central train station. pick a one or two hour destination -- buy return trip ticket for two -- the same day -- return in the evening. when you get to the city of your destination -- roam around the main street and enter into a restaurant of your choice. then return back home in the evening. the experience is hilarious for both -- since everything is new. good luck and bon voyage.

Well I do not know much about Chicago, just make sure that you do not take her to any fast food restaurant unless she asks to go. Because you do not want to seem like a cheapo and make sure that your not taking her to the most expensive restaurant either.
