If the dog has matts all over and they are tight to the skin, the easiest thing for the dog to deal with, would be to take it to the groomer and have her shaved down.

If there are only a few and not that tight, you could try a detangling spray, or even put some conditioner on the area. Use a brush and line comb the area, then try a comb.

You could try a de-matting comb, but they have razor blade edges, and if you don't know what you are doing, you will cut your dog.

It would probably be easiest to take the dog to the groomer to have the matts removed, then you can keep up with daily combing at home to prevent him/her from getting matted again.
Ask your groomer the proper way to brush and comb.

Take him to a groomer.

Dematting rakes have razor-blade edges, and can easily cut your dog's skin if you don't know what you're doing. Trying to brush or comb the mats out will probably just hurt your dog and irritate his skin. NEVER put scissors near a matted dog! That is a recipe for disaster. Your groomer can assess the dog and decide the best way to fix the problem. Your dog may have to be shaved to get the mats out, but at least then you can start growing his coat out mat-free by brushing him every day with a slicker brush and metal comb.

cut them. that's really all that you can do once the dog has the mats. but to keep the animal from getting them again, you must brush the hair daily and thoroughly each day.

get a wire comb, or a dematter comb...DO NOT WASH THE DOG FIRST!! it will make the matt tighter and harder to get out..
if you start from the bottom of the matt and work your way it should work...but if the matt is real bad then you prolly need to take it to the groomers
