I thought about the statement and though why?

I guess it depends on your view of life - positive or negative.
Maybe death is life extended?

Just as breathing oxygen allows us to live, it at the same time allows free (oxygen) radicals into our bodies to form the possible beginnings of cancers.
Most things in life act like double-edge swords. They can both help and hinder us. One glass of wine a day will make you live old - many glasses will give you sclerosis of the liver.
Death is inevitable, but it can come in many forms, some worse than others. Only painful deaths are to be feared.

Or is it a trade off-you have to have death in order to have life.

Holy wah, you sure do have some happy thoughts, don't you? I'm sure to some degree that's true, but you certainly can't live your life that way, or you're in for one long, unhappy journey.
