I tried everything to get my 6 year old to stay in bed. The single trick I found for her is to give her a drink of milk just before bed. It fills her belly, and calms her so she can relax and sleep. But, make sure he goes to the bathroom before trying to put him to bed.

He wants your attention. Make a deal. You'll read him 2 short stories of his choice, then lights out and bedtime. No negotiation. If he comes down after that, don't talk to him, just lead him back to bed. It will become a boring game for him if he doesn't get any reaction from you.
