I'm reading this book... Shane... and I came across a wierd saying that the narrator... a young boy says...
I was beginning to feel my oats about the, proud of myself being able to lick Ollie Johnson at the next place down the road. Fighting, boy style, was much in my mind.
any ideas?

He was beginning to get a bit puffed off and proud because he had a fight with Ollie Johnson and won. He considered fighting as something that was a tough, manly thing to do so he wasn't feeling like a weak little kid who couldn't take care of himself.
Think about it like this:
The term "feeling his oats" might remind someone of a big, strong gorilla beating on his chest because no one would dare attack him.
It's a "You better not mess with me because I'm bad!" kind of image.

"Feeling one's oats" is like feeling confident, frisky, up for an adventure, that kind of thing. "Proud of himself being able to lick Ollie Johnson..." "...fighting, boy style..." ie he was beginning to get a sense of himself as a man; no longer a child who would just swat at someone, but actually use his fists, or kicking etc to defeat another man in a fight.
Reminds me of Frederick Douglass, in his autobiography, in which he describes a fight he had with the overseer, when the overseer was intending to whip him for trying to escape. Douglass got the upper hand in the fight; he said afterwards, "..I was a slave in name only; now, I was a MAN."

He was clearly beginning to express his "wild side" for the first time, and he began to realize this by kickin' the neighbor kid's ****. He's coming into manhood by asserting his intentions to not be docile, and he clearly enjoyed it and perhaps wants to do it again.

feeling oats means feeling energetic/confident
It sounds like he is feeling like he can defend himself in a fight and it makes him proud of himself.
