I have 2 neons; a 96 and a 97. We have never run out of gas but the manual says nothing of damage. It can be difficult to get the car started again after running out, but highly doubt it would cause any "irrepairable" damage. If your tank contains sediment, etc, that can get into the fuel lines, filters, and pumps, costing you in repairs but it can be repaired.

eh?
I dont know, but i was driving a dodge once and it was on empty.
I woke up early in the morning and went to the gas station and I heard a ticking sound under the dashboard all the way to the gas station. The sound a battery makes when it is weak.
It could have just been moisture in the wires but it went away about 10 minutes after i filled up.
I also disco'd the battery once to reset the computer so i could release the traction control and smog the vehicle and it seems work fine.

It won't damage the computer. It can damage the fuel pump if done repeatedly. The fuel lubricates the pump, which is located in the tank. I have seen rare cases in which the car ran out of fuel and the pump was ruined. This may have been because the driver didn't realize that they were out of fuel, so they continued to try and start the car.

you heard wrong. if this was the case then there would be a lot of people with broken cars. its not a good idea to let your car get below 1/4 of a tank simply because water and dirt invariably get in your tank. since gas is lighter water will collect at bottom of tank and the fuel pump sucks off bottom of tank you increase chances of this getting into fuel system. you should use a small 'can' of heet in your fuel tank every four or five fill ups just to keep water minimal. you can get heet at any place that sells automotive supplies - walmart, kmart, autoparts stores etc.

no it won't hurt the computer but that is very hard on the fuel pump as it is in the gas tank and cooled by the gas.

Most vehicles, late or early models, should have no problems with running out of fuel and affecting the computer system whatsoever.

no it will not hurt your computer but if and when you run it out of gas i might suggest changing your fuel filter as you may have got dirt in it from the bottom of the tank

no but it will plug your fuel filter. because you have sudge in the bottom of your tank. when you use the last bit of gas the sudge gets sucked into your filter.

No. It will just stop running until you get more gas. Even the greedy U.S. car makers wouldn't try to get that one past the government safety folks.

no but it can be hard on your fuel pump because it won't be pumping anything so it will spin extremely fast
