I am thinking of the best times to exercise. I usually eat breakfast around 8:30am. I have heard that is isn't good to exercise after a meal, but is it okay to exercise before breakfast?

Exercising before breakfast is the optimal time of day. Growth hormone levels are highest when you first wake up and your body is already in a fat burning mode from the night's sleep.

Before a real breakfast yes, but you should have at least a snack (about 100 calories) before exercising.
Eating something light will start up your metabolism and you will exercise more efficiently.
After exercising, hydrate well, and after it, when you feel your stomach is empty again, have your breakfast.

That's the best time and it get's you going for the whole day.
Not only metabolic wise, also mentally. After your workout you will enjoy your breakfast and you will not feel guilty by eating it.
Just make sure, you drink plenty of water while you are exercising.
