I think this is relatively likely. The earth has been struck by meteorites or asteroids many times, which have wiped out most life forms. I've also seen on the internet where Highly advanced artifacts have been discovered in extremely ancient rock strata. Human footprints have also been found in very ancient rock strata, such as the Canadian shield. What other explanation could there be?

Beautiful question which I had never opened my mind. The first answer which pops into my mind is ABSOLUTELY! I think the manner is different from the Noahic flood because God promised to never do that gig again. I think it is continually being rebuilt through fire - which is a sensationalist way of saying oxygen fed decay. The world is continually being rebuilt as life dies and is reborn. I think the legend of the Phoenix uniquelly Christian for the resurrection. Now I realize, thanks to your question, it is also fitting for life.
Kudos.

Yes, history shows this. Allah tells us in the Qur'an of many generations that have passed. Many of these generations have only recently been unearthed, which is a miracle of the Qur'an.
Eg. of this
'Indeed there was for Saba' (Sheba) a sign in their dwelling place, - two gardens on the right hand and on the left (and it was said to them) "Eat of the provision of your Lord, and be grateful to Him, a fair land and an OftForgiving Lord.'

No. Moreover, any dramatic decline in human population have been due to natural causes, such as diseases (e.g., black plague) or natural disasters (super-volcanic eruptions, global warming/global cooling), or other non-human related caused phenomenon. No supernatural being has killed off a large chunk of humanity, other than humanity killing each other in the name of some supernatural being.
