There are some things known to increase your risk of leukemia, but no one knows why some people do get it and others do not.

Exposure to radiation, such as from accidents, nuclear explosions or therapeutic radiation can cause leukemia, as can x-rays to the mother prenatally. So can some chemotherapy drugs. Another risk factor is exposure to certain chemicals like vinyl chloride, among others. Environmental pollution, like the Love Canal incident, also pose a risk.

Certain genetic and medical conditions increase the risk of leukemia, like Down's syndrome as well.

Certain leukemias and lymphomas are known to be associated with viruse, like HTLV.

And the incidence of childhood leukemia is higher in families with a smoker than nonsmoking families.

In many cases, however, there is no known cause for leukemia.

You can't "get" Leukemia like you would a virus. Leukemia is a type of cancer and cancer is not contracted. Honestly there is no definitive answer on why some people get Leukemia and some don't. There is some scientific evidence showing some genetic links, but that is by no means a grantee. Also environmental factors and things like smoking can increase your risk. Check out the cancer society or CDC websites for more information

I asked the same question when my daughter was diagnosed last year at 6 yrs oldwith AML, of course I knew that they didnt know but I had to ask. No one really knows why you get it but in children and teenagers it can be increased by having downs syndrome. Its a long road to recovery but not a death sentance. I have added a website thats has heaps of info and if you have leukeamia or interested its a good idea to read. I have a blog of my daughters time having chemo if your interested in reading it.

Obviously, it sucks, but from the articles I've been reading, it's a very treatable form of cancer that won't affect his day-to-day life. I read in one that it's basically a cancer of the blood cells and that a pill a day would take care of it over time (kinda like the same way you would take antibiotics). What surprised me most was the story on his wife who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 8 months into her pregnancy with their daughter, Sara. Anyways, the way I see it, it's better than some other forms of cancer....

to the above person, lukemia is not genetic...dumb @$$

No one knows how you get lukemia, if they did, we could have much better studies on how to cure it. One theory is, high voltage radiation, the kind that trickle down from high voltage lines. It mutates the t-cells in your body that fight infection, and it causes the bone marrow to attack itself.
