STONE SOUP

4 fresh tomatoes
1 lb. Italian sausage (bite size pieces)
1 (14 oz.) can Italian tomato sauce
7 c. beef stock
1 c. chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 c. sliced carrots
1 tsp. basil
1 tsp. oregano
2 c. sliced zucchini
1 c. fresh mushrooms
1 green pepper, diced
1/4 c. chopped parsley
1 1/2 c. sliced dill pickles
2 c. frozen tortellini

Combine first 9 ingredients in a large pot and simmer 30 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and simmer an additional hour, adding more water as necessary to cook tortellini. Of course, you must have a proper stone in the bottom of the pot to make it authentic Stone Soup. Makes 10 servings.

Stone Soup Recipe
How to Collect the "Stones":
The watchword is edible. Edible but not serviceable. Every time you cut a vegetable and have some good food left on the end. Any little scrap of food that might not be the right size or shape, but is perfectly good food. Any food that is perhaps a bit over ripe but would be fine cooked. Cut these foods in bite size chunks and freeze them in quart containers. When you've got 14 qt containers you're ready to roll.

How to Cook the Soup:
Basically you can make any soup you want out of your stones. If its been a long day and you're not in a creative mood, here's how to cook mine (This stuff is painless, I swear it cooks itself!)
Take the 14qts of Stones and dump it in a 4 1/2 gallon pot. Put the flame on high and cover.
After about 10 minutes you should be able to separate the stones with a cooking spoon. Then add 1 can of crushed tomatoes (6lbs, 10oz) and 2 1/2 gallons of water. Stir.
Keep the flame on high. When it comes to a boil, add 1 1/2 cups barley and 1 1/2 cups macaroni. Turn the flame down and simmer for 45 minutes.
Add :
4 tablespoons Oregano
4 tablespoons Basil
4 tablespoons Granulated Garlic
5 tablespoons Salt
1/2 tablespoons Black Pepper
2 cups Dried Parsley Flakes.
Stir and simmer an additional 15 minutes.
Add 3 cups grated parmesan. Stir and pour into a 5 gallon bucket

There is a children's book which outlines this - it's great to get kids cooking, reading and having fun with mom and dad. - or classrooms at school sometimes do it together. The tale has a great lesson for kids to learn - and adults, too!
Stone soup is actually just a basic soup with assorted available veggies - with the stone being the "secret" ingredient. We did this with my son, and that "stone" was a sacred item in our kitchen for a long time because he loved the soup so much.

Stone Soup is basically a hodge podge soup of what you have available it's one of those things that's different everytime because you use whatever you have at hand to make it it really doesn't have any set ingredients.

It's also a referance to a story where a band of soldiers come into a poor starving village & manage to trick the villagers into providing the various ingredients & so the entire village eats well because they pooled the resources.

The Stone Soup Story

Once upon a time, somewhere in Eastern
Europe, there was a great famine. People
jealously hoarded whatever food they could
find, hiding it even from their friends
and neighbors.

One day a peddler drove his wagon into a
village to try to sell some wares. The
peddler asked a few folks if there was a
place he could stay for the night or get
something to eat.

"There's not a bite to eat in the whole
province," he was told. "Better keep moving on."

"Oh, I have everything I need," he said.
"In fact, I was thinking of making some
stone soup to share with all of you."

He pulled an iron cauldron from his wagon,
filled it with water, and built a fire
under it. Then, with great ceremony, he
retrieved an ordinary-looking stone from
a velvet bag and dropped it into the water.

By now, hearing the rumor of food, most of
the villagers had come to the square or
watched from their windows. As the peddler
sniffed the "broth" and licked his lips in
anticipation, hunger began to overcome
their skepticism.

"Ahh," the peddler said to himself rather
loudly, "I do like a tasty stone soup.
Of course, stone soup with CABBAGE --
that's hard to beat."

Soon a villager approached hesitantly,
holding a cabbage he'd retrieved from
its hiding place, and added it to the pot.

"Capital!" cried the peddler. "You know,
I once had stone soup with cabbage and a
bit of salt beef as well, and it was fit
for a king."

The village butcher managed to find some
salt beef...

...and so it went, villagers brought
potatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms,
and so on, until there was indeed a
delicious meal for all.

The villagers offered the peddler a great
deal of money for the "magic" stone, but
he refused to sell and traveled on the next day.

And from that time on, long after the famine had ended, they
reminisced about the finest soup they'd ever had.

At a "stone soup party" each guest/couple would bring one or two
ingredients that go into soup. The host/hostess can be responsible
for the stock, whether it is vegetable or meat. We have done this
with absolutely no instructions to anyone as to what to bring and
rarely do we get duplicate ingredients. And, if we do, that is part
of the fun. As each guest/couple arrives they put their ingredients
into the pot. And, you let it cook until you are ready to eat.

Typical ingredients are mushrooms, onions, potatoes, beans, corn,
squash, tomatoes, garlic, soup pasta, cabbage, celery, bok choy,
leeks, turnips, ... ANYTHING.

you boil a couple of large stones from your backyard, add a little onion, potatoes cut into cubes, salt to taste, maybe a little chicken broth if you like boil it up with some water and enjoy! LOL. i dunno.
