One celled organisms evolved into multicelled organisms.
These evolved into fish (this is a big jump but the details would be lost on you).
These evolved into amphibians.
These evolved into reptiles.
These evolved into small mammals. (another big jump, same reason).
These evolved into primates.
We split from the monkeys & ape family at this point. We never evolved from monkeys or the apes.

Love your question, mostly the "if" part. Indeed if we evolved from monkeys where did they come from? I think a much better question is: If, in fact, we evolved at all, and if at one time we were monkeys, why would we evolve away from the monkeys abilities? Wouldn't we through "natural selection" have not only kept the monkeys physical abilities and "feet that can be used like hands", etc. and still evolved in beings similar to what we are? There is no explanation for that whatsoever. And if we accept the "new" answer that they give us which is "common ancestor", still the question is there. Humans are easily broken, quite rigid, and relatively lame, physically compared to any primate. But not to worry, the missing link will never be found, and that is simply because it is not there to be found.

1. We didn't evolve from monkeys. We evolved from a common ancestor with the apes. 2. All evolutionary changes are, are adaptions. That's it. Let's say there were Chimps in Africa and Chimps in Europe. Let's say there was a climate change in Africa. Sooner or later the Chimps in Africa could be considered a different species after enough evolutionary changes occur. The ones in Europe would still be changing at a normal pace. 3. We won't evolve back into anything. I have no idea where the hell you got this delusion from.

We did not evolve from monkeys, people and monkeys evolved from a common ancestor that was a primate. If you did a yahoo search on this question you'll see that it's been asked numerous times and always with this answer.

Humans evolved from a common ancestor we share with chimpanzees and bonobos, not monkeys. Monkeys/chimps/homos evolved from a common ancestor that included these animals and lemurs. Remember, evolution traces itself back all the way to the first development of self-replicating molecules of RNA, and all of us emerged eventually from that soup.

We evolved from monkeys.....and then they evolved from us.
And then I evolved from them....or tried to evolve.
But maybe I'm still just a monkey?

Our last common ancestor was with the chimps and bonabos. Before that, it went old world moneys, tarsiers, tree shrews, laurasiatheres, xenartharans, etc all the way back to some one-celled organism. See a book for more info.

Didn't you hear, they evolved from nothing, just like our earth. One day this microscopic life formed from this cosmic substance that came from nothing, then there was this electrical charge that mysteriously came from nothing that shocked life into this little substance, and it eventually grew over billions of years and here we are!
