I bought the Storage Mate canister looking plastic containers for my Sugar, Flour, All Purpose Flour, Powered Sugar and Brown Sugar. I am a big baker.

I have labeled them and put the date of purchase on each canister so that I will know if I need to replace as I bake seasonally.

My question is today, I had done some baking and used up the sugar and flour. I was in a hurry and did not wash the canisters before adding the new in. Is that a problem? Do I need to rewash them before I add the fresh in?

Just curous.

Thank you for helpful answers....

First of all you sound just like me with the labeling and dating. Right on!

Anyway...if you used them all up then you don't really need to worry. Also it sounds like you're doing enough baking so that you don't have flour and sugar hanging around for years at a time.

If you only bake once a year like around the holidays, then I would purchase fresh flour and sugar etc anyways so that I would be guaranteed fresh ingredients. However if you're breaking out the oven mitts and pans every other month, there is no worry about washing the containers.

Next time you use something up and you have the time give them a good wash.

nope a little bit of old all purpose flour won't spoil the new bag. its not like a bad apple in an apple barrel. Sugar has no expiration as far as i know.

I have all of mine in canister container also, but I never wash them, uless I have spilled something in to them accidently. They should be fine as long as they are well sealed.

no, you do not have to wash the canisters between each bag of flour, sugar, etc... most of your bakery's and restaurants just dump in new bags when theirs get low... no washing

Yes, My Mother always says the newest four in the container is the age of the oldest.

Not unless you dunk the raw chicken right in the flour canister.

You'll be ok until next time it runs out.

Not really, unless you noticed movement in the bottom of the canister.

Not unless you have spilled something in them and it's going to contaminate the goods.
