Turn off the gas?

You didn't give us much to go on.

Natural wood? Let the fire go out on it's own. Spread the logs out with a poker and let nature take its course.

Be careful with water, you could crack the firebrick.

Call the fire department, if you haven't cleaned the creosote, tar like substance out of your fireplace. While you might be able to put it out by taking out the log it also can burn the house if it's been on too long and you're waiting for answers here. You're supposed to have the fluke or chimney cleaned every year, so this doesn't happen. If you have an elbow in your fireplace, you shoud have it proffesionally cleaned and it will cost more than a straight chimney. We called the fire department when that happened at our house and they told us to have our chimney cleaned and not to use the fireplace without cleaning the chimney.
