First of all, does he understand what stealing is?
How are you yourself and your husband regarding honesty? Make sure you are role modelling good ethics and respect for others yourselves.

In this situation I would be very careful how I handled it - and obviously you are, since you are asking questions here rather than flying off the handle with anger.

I would definitely talk to the boy. Tell him that what he did was wrong and not acceptable behaviour for anyone. I would have him figure out a way to pay the money back - either work it off with extra chores at home (that would be best) or deduct it from any allowance he usually gets. Tell your son that you will advance the $20.00 on his behalf, but that he must tell the organizers that that is what is happening. (so the fund raising event will not be short changed).

Then I would go with him to the organizers, and ask for a PRIVATE appointment with the organizer of the event, and have him confess what happened. And tell them that his parents will advance the money to them, and what he is going to do to make restitution. Keep track of his restitution payments.

There is a fine line between vengeance and punishment - it's called justice. Good luck with dealing with this.

He stoled money. That's not OK. You need to nip this in the bud right now. Take him to school or to whomever he was fundraising for and make him tell them that he STOLED the money that he raised for the event. Make it seem like a big deal, humiliate him for it. Then of course pay the money for him. Don't tell him that you are paying the money back though! If he has allowance take it from his allowance. If he doesn't have allowance make him do some extra work around the house to 'raise' the money to pay back. Or better yet see if there is something he can do for the organization that he took the money from.

he has to tell those he stole from, and work it off. But it could lead to more bad behavior if he has to live with the label of a thief! Make sure the work equals the crime, cleaning up a public park, or even the school grounds. He will learn and help others he hurt!

Ask him why he felt that was the only way to get the money, he may at nine, know the result from stealing. Explain to him how he can earn money by not stealing!

I'd take him right to the people and have him admit what he did right in front of you to them. This way your sure he does it. I think this might be embarrassing to him and also teach him a lesson. If he doesn't already put him to work doing some chores around the house where you pay him a certain amount until he reaches the 20 bucks he owes the school to pay them back.

I think that he should tell the fundraisers and already have a plan in mind to begin to pay that money back. If you do it for him, that leads to his thoughts being " mom will always get me out of problems". My parents are going through this with my 35 year old brother. Make him do it, even if he cries. Good Luck.

Make him tell the person in charge of the fundraising, replace the twenty, then make him pay you off by washing your car, mowing the grass, etc. And maybe limit his involvement, in whatever activity it is, that they are raising money for.

i wouldn't if i were you but i would make him pay.i think that he should maybe have some of his stuff taken away and ask him if he likes things being taken from him. another idea is every community has things set up were you can do community service i think that would not only teach him a lesson but it would help someone else out and teach him a little empathy for other people and make him realize just how lucky he has it..

Punish him by making him admit his wrongdoing to the person thats in charge and remember to take the money away from his next allowance plus some.
