Yes, and No. No, It is not safe to travel in southern Thailand along the Malaysian border. Though the government is trying to currently negotiate a peace with the muslim terrorists. A canadian tourist was recently killed in a bomb attack in the Southern province which is about 1000 to 1200 miles from Bangkok.

Yes, it is safe to travel to Bangkok. There is currently martial law there but, that is to prevent any violence after the coup. So, if you are there during the time martial law is in effect do not gather more than 5 people around you and demonstrate against the government. The martial law should be rescinded by the end of October if not sooner. Thailand could not afford to upset tourists as it brings a lot of money into Thailand.

The government is being conservative. They object to the coup and this is their way of punishing Thailand. The coup was bloodless and there have been a few arrests and 5 fire bombings of schools about 60 miles north of Bangkok. No one was hurt, just property damage. Over 80 percent of all the voters in Thailand are in favor of the coup.

You could wait till things settle down but, that may not happen for 6 months to a year. They just installed a temporary assembly and a cabinet. The open elections will be in October 2007.

If you are really curious as to what is going on. Read the Bangkok Post online, the website is below. The paper is pretty politically neutral. And one of the few that spoke out against the former Prime Minister Taksin.

Good luck

A government issues a warning like this, because if something should happen to you while there, the government will not see it necessary to help you in any way.... because you were warned.
