My wee 7 week old orphan kitten got hit on the head yesterday by a slamming door (strong gust of wind). The vet gave her an injection to ease the pressure on her spine and said to give her 24 hours. She doesn't appear to be any better after 18 hours: pupils hugely dilated and eyes unresponsive. Her body is limp and her wee feet are all pale (vet said from the shock).
She still breathes strongly on her own but am scared to try to try to give her water.
Am heartbroken as she was such a gorgeous, friendly, bouncy little kitten but should i get her put down?

She just took a little water from a tiny baby bottle.Thank you all for taking the time to answer, they are all great pieces of advice.I will give her till later today snuggled up with her blankets and fresh hot water bottles and take her back to the vet later for his advice.

If she doesn't improve within the amount of given time, you should. The pressure on her spine will increase and, from the sound of it,the trauma could have caused her to become blind. Her limp body could be a sign of severe nerve damage due to the pressure on her spine;the pale paws are not good after 18 hours. If her tounge appears pale as well, try to give her a little, tiny amount of water, but be careful. If nothing avails, the kindest thing to do would to put her down;you wouldn't want to be paralyzed and blind your whole life after an incident now would you?
I pray she does get better,as I have a cat myself, and I would die if he was in the same situation as your little darling.Be strong for her,and don't give up hope until the last second,of the last minute,of the last hour.

Wow... this is a hard one.

Head trauma kittens sometimes recover, but they need aggressive treatment, this means IV drugs given repeatedly to reduce the brain swelling.

Do you have an emergency hospital near bye? If you do, please take her in and ask that they AGGRESSIVELY treat her...

That is if you are OK with the possible results-

Even if she lives, which she may, she will not be the same. She may life a few days to die later, she may life a few weeks to develop further problems.

If she lives, she may not be able to be the bouncy kitten she was, she may be slow, sweet, and very docile.

I've known people who have continued treating and treated aggressively and their kittens have lived, but I've known allot more who have recognized that for some reason, this little special one didn't have much time on this earth, and let them go.

The best you can do for her is to have an emergency doc or a vet neurologist look at her now, and provide in hospital care fro a few days... if that is not a possibility....

although living things can return from terrible hurts, to have fully dilated eyes and no response is not good.

Do what your heart tells you to do.
My sympathy to you

I definetly would not put her down if I were you! Kittens can be just as resiliant as babies. And the vet may be just going from experience with cats, which is perfectly fine, but this kitten may not me as weak as other cats. We have a miniature dauschound who jumbed too far and slipped a disk when he was about 3 years old. The vet said to have him put down because he was paralized in the back legs. We took him home and had him in a bed with a doggie diaper. We took care of him and slowly let him try to walk little by little. About 6 months later he was walking and running after small childrens ankles again! His back legs are crooked and sometimes fall down, but he's still alive and that's all that matters to us! No, he isn't in pain. We paid for painkillers until he was no longer in pain. So, no, I would not put the kitten down. Give her little body a chance! Good luck!

Your kitten really needs to go to a vet as soon as possible! Being a little 'strange' after a bump to the noggin is not so bad, but the fact that your cat convulsed and lost his bowels everywhere is NOT a good thing. He may be fine now, but it's not worth taking chances over. He may be hemorrhaging and you may not know it. He may go to sleep and simply not wake up. Take the little guy to a vet, it's better to be safe than losing your fur-baby. What would you do if a human child suffered head trauma, pooped everywhere, convulsed and slept a lot? You'd take them to see a medical expert.

I would ring the vet straight away! if they are open, or they should have a 24hr number. If you want to give any cat water, you should get a syringe and put water in it with a little bit of honey in it. Thats what the vet told me to do last week when mine stopped eating.

Goodluck,,, i really hope your little kitten is ok... it breaks your heart to see them in any discomfort.

Um no. My cat was around that age and she got stepped on head by some steal-toed boots. She would just walk around in a circle and thats all she could do, but she ended up getting better without anything to ease the pain. But it she doesn't get better soon, and there's no hope, than yes. If she won't be hurtting anymore than I would. But only if you think its right. My cat had the same symptons.

Is she in any pain? if not give her a bit more time she has has a huge trauma.. if you have an eye dropper you might want to just put a drop or two of water to her mouth to keep it moist .. also remember to take a moist rag to her little potty areas . your going to need to be mama for a spell and well its better to clean her with a rag or soft cloth
do let me know how she is doing ... she is lucky to have you

I guess if it was me I would wait the 24 hours and if she isnt better take her back in and see what the vet says. Ask him his option on whether or not he thinks she would be put down or if he thinks she will pull through.
Hope this kinda helps. Good luck!

well i would give it just a little more time because her body is in shock and maybe she will come out of it...i feel so badly for the poor thing i hope she will be ok ...i will say a prayer for her perhaps you can wet a cloth and moisten her lips instead of giving her water straight
