According to the following eyewitness, the Pope kissed the Koran as a sign that he has also great respect for Islam and that he was aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people.

The Chaldean Patriarch of Iraq, Raphael I Bidawid is the spiritual guide of the majority of Iraq's one million Christians -- who still celebrate their liturgy in Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus.

Raphael I Bidawid, Patriarch of the Chaldeans told in an interview:

“On May 14th I was received by the Pope, together with a delegation composed of the Shiite imam of Khadum mosque and the Sunni President of the council of administration of the Iraqi Islamic Bank. At the end of the audience the Pope bowed to the Muslim holy book the Koran presented to him by the delegation and he kissed it as a sign of respect. The photo of that gesture has been shown repeatedly on Iraqi television and it demonstrates that the Pope is not only aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people, he has also great respect for Islam.”

With love in Christ.

this was done by Pope John Paul II out of respect for God. the Koran is a book, nothing more than a book, in reality just like the bible. it is what we get OUT of the bible that makes it powerful - not the product itself.
Pope JP2 was trying to show how all people can work together otward one common goal -- striving to please GOD. he also went to and prayed at the Wailing Wall. He also kissed the ground of every country he visited - thanking God for his ablity to travel and share his love of Christ.

Surprisingly this is in line with Catholic doctrine...

Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium 16, November 21, 1964: “…The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day…”

Muslims are belivers, they belive that there is a bible and there was Jesus. The pope did that out of respect for the religion. Also Muslims do respect the bible but belive that it has been altered with. Unbelivers would be polytheist or who belive in many gods, such as Hindus, Buddhists ect.
