I too have often wondered about this...
Sorry I can't give you an answer, but as an ex-publican I can tell you the mark up on non alcoholic drinks is far higher than those on their alcoholic equivalents.

Someone should always be the designated driver and some pregnant women choose to go to bars. So, there is a point for requesting a non-alcoholic drinks for some people.

Not every one likes, or wants, alcohol. Some people may be on medication which makes them unable to touch alcohol. Also, have you never heard of "Don't drink and drive"? Some folk may be the designated driver for the night out.
However, as non alcoholic drinks are available, there must be a demand for them.
Personally, I can have a fun and sociable evening while drinking tap water, ice and a slice of lemon.

The ambience or social environment. Some people just don't like to drink, especially when driving. Others may be recovering alcoholics, but this is sort of mental masterbation for them.

I'm a recovering alcoholic and don't get the point of people brewing decaf-coffee at meetings. When that coffee pot comes around, most A.A.'s want the "real thing."

Sometimes I dont feel like drinking but that doesnt mean I dont want to hang out with my friends. Another good possability is that the non alcoholic drinker is the DD. Always THE most important person in the bar!

People can choose to drink whatever the hell they like. They may have personal experience with alcoholism or just not like the taste of alcohol. Non drinkers have the same rightst to go to the pub as drinkers and have more fun as they get no hangovers. For many others it may be a social visit to the pub and so there is no obligation to drink alcohol and get trollied

there are these things they call "cars", amazing things really, take you from one place to another realllllly quicky...just need two things
1- Fuel (petrol's quite a common one, you may have noticed those big stations with pumps and lots of people? well hold on tight cos this second thing is really gonna shock you...)
2- Drivers. (these are the people who sit in the front of the car pushing peddles and turning something we call the wheel) Its a flaw i know, but as yet we've not got those magical cars normally seen in sci-fi (although apparently in your world too) that drive themselves. Now the thing is you're not actually allowed to drink if you're driving, yet sometimes people like to go out with friends, who need a way of getting to said social place, so now you see the catch 22. Going to a bar, but can't drink, so instead of spending an entire evening watching people drink many drivers like to have a non alcoholic drink....now do we think that could be the answer to your question???
maybe?
other than that believe it or not (shocking again i know) but sometimes people don't feel the need to drink alcohol to have fun (i know im still taking in the enormity of this fact) but sometimes people just like to go out, meet people and chat without the alcohol.
Hope that helps.

Just because people do not like to drink doesn't automatically ban them from going to bars to either hand out with their friends or socialize. There is a lot more to life than drinking. And a lot of the people there aredesignated drivers.

when i was on shore leave in Japan theyhad signs up in the bars that said pop cost more than beer. This is a BAR. nowadays i don't always feel like drinking but still like to go into a bar to chat with my friends, check out the babes, and listen to music. and if you're the DD you can still enjoy yourself without drinking, secure in the knowledge that its somebody else's turn next time!

Designated Driver comes to mind. Also, I had a friend that did not drink, he came for the fun and to smoke pot. Man did he get us into some trouble at times.
